Stallone: ‘America Apologizes Too Much’

Recently, FOX NEWS’ Bill O’Reilly interviewed Sylvester Stallone [1] about his immensely popular movie, “The Expendables.” As I watched the interaction between O’Reilly and Stallone, it was readily apparent that Stallone was cut from a different cloth than many inside Hollywood: he loves this country and he’s proud to be an American.
The interview took place because the L.A. Times took a critical stance against “The Expendables,” reporting that Stallone created it to promote “apple-pie patriotism” among movie-goers. When O’Reilly asked Stallone if exploiting such patriotism was the intention behind the film, Stallone laughed and said no. He said it was a movie where “good guys…take out the trash.” After pausing he then said: “It’s pretty simple, [if] you’re bad you’ve got to go.” Other than this, Stallone said the move emphasizes a redemption of sorts, inasmuch as “The Expendables” ultimately risk their own lives (on screen) to do something good for somebody, and by so doing, get “their morality back.”
As O’Reilly reiterated other criticisms that have been aimed at “The Expendables,” Stallone said he didn’t mind people focusing on the fact that the characters in the movie “are patriots” and “are proud to be Americans.” Stallone did say he had read some criticisms where people tried to say the movie communicated a veiled disapproval of our military and CIA actions abroad, and that it put the “focal point on our intrusion into other countries around the world” and how “we tend to over-extend our boundaries.” But Stallone shot all that blather down by saying “I don’t believe that at all.” (i.e., he doesn’t believe our armed forces and intelligence ops are running around the world making things worse rather than better.)
Yes, I read that statement as well.
Not sure what his position on gun-control is today, though. Do you have a recent statement expressing as much? I his views have changed.
My better half supported Bill Clinton during his first presidential bid (definitely liberal). Fast-ward to - 2010. You would never have guessed it.
I hope Mr. Stallone has more sense than he did in ‘98.

Rocky is on the top of the list. Actually enjoyed Judge Dredd, but than again, it’s been a while. Copland is a good one too.
Saw the Lords of Flatbush (Stallone wrote the screenplay) when it was first released.

I agree. Don’t bother to see SOMMWS and Rhinestone. Unfortunately, I viewed both.
As a rock climber at the time, “Cliffhanger” was awful. Totally fake, and him climbing to the top of the mountain in the same time it took John Lithgow to get there in a helicopter was stupendously incredible.
That said, I’m generally a fan, and the new flick was a lot of fun.

Copland seemed to teach Sly what to look for in a movie. Ever since, he’s been different and he’s realized what many of us are looking for.
This movie has nothing to do with american patriotism or america. I saw it.
You must have missed ‘Rocky Balboa’. It was as good as the first and far better than any of the sequels by far. Agreed on Copland though, Excellent movie. Mangold’s best work IMHO and a great cast as well.
I’m not much for Death Race 2000 though. I never saw much in the crappy Roger Corman junk...if it was entertaining, maybe, but it rarely was.

Yep, I missed out on Rocky Balboa. I’ve heard it was quite good.
Definitely worth seeing. So is the last Rambo if you are a fan. Stallone seems to be making a point of tying up loose ends. As we all get older, at least for me, it strikes a chord.
I don’t believe anyone said that it was an “America”, or, “American patriotism” film.
Well, a religious and political ideology that promotes slavery, lying to nonbelievers, forcible conversion, and the oppression of women seems like something we should discriminate against with fervor.
What, no Rambo? The one line in Rambo II that made it great was: “Just once, for America to love us, as much as we love it”.
Well, the Los Angeles Times hates all Republicans, Christians, conservatives, and especially hates Cowboys.
Believe it or not, it used to be a normal newspaper. But now it is not. It used to represent Southern California and, Western America, and all the freedom loving people who live in it — but that was long time ago and it is now very very far from its roots.
That’s why it hates Sylvester Stallone, and all the movies he made, anything that has Apple pie patriotism in it, it hates the troops, and even it hates America.
And that is also why it is still holding back Barack Hussein Obama’s videotape where he says such good things about his Palestinian and communist buddies.
Too bad that no one else in all of America has a copy of this tape.
By the way, it just is a coincidence, I was watching a Sylvester Stallone movie yesterday — “Assassins” with Antonio Banderas. Stallone did a pretty good job, at least he was trying hard, and I enjoyed the movie.
Also again by the way, I met him once in LA, and he seems like a really nice guy.
I was impressed by that one too and I am not a Stallone fan by any measure of the word.

I think he’s also got lots of apologizing to do for “Judge Dredd”. I still snicker whenever I hear: “I am the law”.
Stallone is facing up to his own morality, which is what resonates. When we were younger, we had this crazy Idea that we would live forever, or if not that we could set our own terms. Sure ain’t so!
Me, too. I also kind of liked Nighthawks, which I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet.
Thanks for mentioning Nighthawks. I completely forgot about that film. I love the kitchen scene. Completely unexpected.
