O’Reilly will undercount the number in attendance like he did the D.C. Tea Party. O’Reilly pretty much called anyone reporting the correct number on his show a liar and kept repeating 80,000. Anyone who saw the pictures new that there was no way that was an accurate estimate.

On 9/24/09, the DC Fire Dept issued the following statement (since edited, but I saved a copy): http://newsroom.dc.gov/show.aspx/agency/fems/section/2/release/18165

"DC Fire Department Report" Quote Regarding September 12 Event Misrepresents Agency Policy

In reference to the September 12th Tea Party event held in Washington DC, quoting a “DC Fire Department Report”, regardless of what any media reported, the size of the crowd of those who attended this event were never estimated by DC Fire & EMS. Any reports contrary to this are false. The DC Fire & EMS Department does not estimate crowd sizes.

A Twitter posting estimating the crowd gathering at Lafayette Park only as “large, possibly as many as 60 thousand” stated that it was an early estimation of that specific area (Lafayette Park), not the number of participants in the event.

That low-ball estimate was just for one of the pre-march assembly areas, and not even the main assembly area. I was there, and most of the people joined the march while it was in progress.

That low-ball estimate was just for one of the pre-march assembly areas, and not even the main assembly area. I was there, and most of the people joined the march while it was in progress, streaming from the subway stations. The current article at the URL above was edited to change "Lafayette Park" to "Freedom Plaza" after I grabbed the text.

Estimates of crowd sizes from reported subway station statistics are invalid because the station managers opened the gates because the platforms became dangerously overcrowded. Thus, they had no way to tell how many people from the turnstile counts, because the turnstiles were bypassed.
