Actually it is a true open primary. I asked the precinct worker if I could have a dem ballot instead of my repub one and she said you only have to ask.

Unless you are an unaffiliated voter the precinct worker was wrong.

This was a state sponsored primary and since the 1998 reforms which allowed the participation of "Independents", no cross ballot voting is allowed.

The Presidential primaries are Party sponsored and are true closed primaries.
