Personally I like J. D. and I wish him well. Personally, I do not like McCain and the feeling is reciprocal. Yet in the final analysis I believe that, for all our differences, McCain has the well being of the Republic at heart. I can almost see McCain in a Senatoral toga pondering the direction of the Republic. It’s frequently grating but he’s always been like that, ever since he came back from Vietnam. In talking to McCain you had better be sharp, you better be focused and you had better know your stuff. He’s blunt and gruff like a lot of ex-navymen and if your feelings are hurt easily it’s best to avoid him.

I’d rather be at a tailgater with J. D. He’s a big, friendly bullsitter but I can’t shake the feeling that he’s going with the flow. He says all the words in the right order to the point that it sounds programmed. Given time, maybe, but not now.

It’s difficult to measure what effect the tea party movement will have. Ordinarily I could tell you how the vote would go, county by county, precinct by precinct and sometimes household by household. I can’t this time but I really don’t think that the tea party will have that much impact by the way that the campaign has shaped.

I've no doubt, really, that the well-being of the Republic is a high priority for Senator McCain.
