Kelly surges despite Palin road bump
Politico ^ | 21 August 2010 | JONATHAN ALLEN & KASIE HUNT

TUCSON, Ariz. — No one will ever accuse Jesse Kelly of bringing weak tea to the party.

The conservative 29-year-old Marine combat veteran and tea party favorite made waves this week when a video of him criticizing Sarah Palin's endorsements of "people who will sell our principles down the river" surfaced and caused a stir.

The brief moment of national notoriety notwithstanding, Kelly is surging at the end of the 8th District GOP primary campaign here, largely on the strength of an impressive grassroots organization and a cocky, free-wheeling style that contrasts sharply with that of the more measured, more disciplined former state Sen. Jonathan Paton...........

"Believe me, if my goal was to get on the Armed Services Committee, or Ways and Means or any of these other great committees you need to be on, then we'd be in a lot of trouble," he said. "My goal is to have my country back and to have a government that leaves me the hell alone and I don't want anything else. And I'm not there for the next cocktail party, and I'm not there to make a bunch of friends. I'm not there to go along with liberalism. I'm there to fight liberalism. That's what I'm going there to do."

FYI I voted for JD, flawed candidate that he is. A wasted vote since McCain will win by double digits.
Not a wasted vote. It's not a wasted vote to vote for someone just because they have little chance of winning.

It would only be a wasted vote if there was a 3rd candidate who did have a good chance of winning but wasn't as good politically as your first choice. That's not the case in AZ. Deakins has no chance and McCain is the enemy so you don't "waste" your vote by casting it for JD.

Interestingly omitted from the thread was the fact that Kelly said Palin was the best conservative candidate at this time and that he would probably vote for her in the primary if she ran, which he thought she would.

It appears that dense PDSers can’t delve past headlines from dinosaur media that float their boat. Next time be sure and watch the video before you make fools of yourself.

You are so right. They are reacting to the word "diss" in the headline, rather than the actual substance of what Kelly said, which was a very measured and thoughtful criticism of one thing that Palin did.

I for one oppose McCain and support Palin. Do I like Palin’s endorsement of McCain? No. But I also find Palin has bigger balls than any conservative male out there, except for Michele Bachman
Those who attack Palin (and Kelly, by the way, is NOT one of those) usually push candidates who have much bigger spots on their records than Palin has. Ron Paul, for example. Or Mitt Romney.

Palin is actually doing something and putting herself out there attacking Obama every day in a more aggressive manner than any other Republican or Tea Party person out there
You are right about that. She's not perfect. Who is? But she's out there fighting the fight.

I just read the thread. Nothing I saw changed my mind. I think we should all work together, even if we disagree sometimes over which candidates to support.

Bashing Palin, who isn’t even a freaking candidate in 2010, is about as useful as sh*tting in a bowl of soup. What does it get you?

McCain is not my enemy - Obama, Pelosi, Reid are.

You really don’t read, do you? Show me where I bashed Kelly.

I defended him.

I said his comments were overblown by the press and then run with by a bunch of hysterics. He didn’t say anything that was that big of a deal.

How many times do you have to vote with the enemy before you are the enemy?

And on the subject of Obama, do you think McCain really ran an all-out effort to beat Obama in 2008? If now, why not?

In my humble opinion, your ‘all or nothing’ perspective may ensure continued Democrat/liberal cultural and economic domination of our great country. Please save your invective for someone other than me.

I voted for McCain in 2008 and if I lived in AZ I would vote for him in the general (assuming he wins on Tue, which he probably will), though I would vote for JD in the primary and have, in fact, sent him money.

I’m not an all-or-nothing conservative. I see that there are times when we must actually support RINOs, as Fiorina in California.

But McCain has proven over and over again his allegiance to the enemy camp. You might bristle at the word “enemy” and shut your eyes as tight as you can... me, I’m willing to keep my eyes wide open, even when I actually have to vote for the b*st*rd. Which I did once.

I agree entirely with your first two paragraphs. I live in AZ and voted for J.D. After McCain wins the primary, I definitely shall give him my vote. If I lived in California, I would vote for Carly, and probably, with some difficulty, vote for Whitman.

I regret voting for Perot over Bush 41 in 1992, because Bush 41 was not conservative enough. I learned my lesson from that mistake, and yes “My eyes are wide open” in subsequent elections.

You have my condolences for living in California; hopefully circumsatnces will provide a happy move or a conservative statewide earthquake, whichever is earlier.

Sounds like we agree on mostly everything. You just didn’t like my characterization of McCain as “the enemy”. Fine. In discussing these things with you, I won’t use that terminology again.

Sorry that I gave you the impression I lived in Cal. My brother does, and he’s voting for Fiorina and he’s a lifetime conservative.

I live in NJ, a state that might be actually waking up. At least partially. Of course, it’s loaded with public unions, dole recipients and reflexive NY leftists who think the only good dollar is a taxed dollar... but there are some who are waking up.

Thanks for the email. Congratulations on living in NJ, energized by the gallant Chris Christie. Several of my high school classmates (1956) worked very hard for his election, and now the state has probably been saved.

Take care

I had the pleasure of spending some time with Jesse last night, and was (again) impressed by his drive, passion, and bedrock conservatism.

Go Jesse!

It’s not that we “hate” Palin, we just don’t consider her much of a family role model, we oppose her McPain endorsement, and we think her unelectable.

Interesting. I wonder how President Reagan would fit your "family role model" definition. In addition to being divorced, his relationship with his children apparently left a lot to be desired.

His daughter Patty decided, in a very public way, to intentionally humiliate her parents by actively opposing most if not all of her father's policies. Books she wrote when younger portrayed Reagan family life as less than ideal. In his memoir Michael Reagan came public with his molestation by a camp counselor when he was eight. His father allegedly never responded, privately or publicly, to the claim.

President Reagan's emotionally distant relationship with his children is well-documented, as are those who accused him of touting family values, but not living them. That doesn't deter the many who believe he is the 20th century's greatest president.

I wonder about people who expect perfection in our public figures. Sarah Palin can't keep her family in tow that easily. President Reagan couldn't either. But none of Palin's children has turned against her. Her oldest daughter decided to have sex at a young age and got pregnant. The sperm donor is an attention whore. Oh well. If we had the internet and People magazine back when Patti Davis was writing about how awful it was to be a Reagan, things might have turned out differently.

As far as Palin's electability, she may or may not be electable. If she isn't, then the media will have done its job. But there is no question about her political influence. As for her personal failings, Sarah Palin carried and gave birth to a baby with Down's Syndrome, when a majority of women in her position decide to abort. That tells me all I need to know about her character.
