I thought that they went into battle to get away from the sound of the pipes.

Despite being unarmed, Mr Millin marched up and down the shore at Sword Beach in his kilt piping "Highland Laddie".

Oh, yeah, a great old standby.

I like bagpipe jokes, but I also like bagpipe music. (Although I play the harp myself.)

The last thing German soldiers wanted to hear was that the guys wearing skirts who preferred an up close and personal fight using an axe over a gun were on their way.

Damn. That’s brave.

Your damned right, considering the Germans were probably all trying to hit him to shut him up!(I'm Scot-Irish BTW and I love the pipes).

I bet he was mad as hell when they lined up for weapons and he was handed bagpipes.

Scottish troops are traditionally led into battle by their piper. I know for sure that happened as recently as Desert Storm (first hand reports) ....not sure about the latest wars.

God bless this brave man. The only other unarmed men on that whole beach were medics. RIP.
