Republicans shouldn't engage in personal attacks against President Obama or other Democrats on the campaign trail, a top House Republican said Wednesday.
Conference Chairman Mike Pence (Ind.) pressed his party to attack ideas with which they disagree, but to avoid attacking opponents during an election cycle that has been noted for its heated rhetoric.

Yes, we do need to use Alinsky ourselves. We also can not expect the left to play by the rules or follow the law. The example you just gave is a perfect item we should have been going after.
There is a huge difference between going after Obama for a snitch program and screaming racist at every turn and calling Michelle Fatso.

Beyond the Willie Horton ad, one of the best known in American history, I particularly enjoyed his ad for Ronald Reagan in which Jimmy Carter was portrayed in a series of increasingly sad sack images while the soundtrack played, "I remember you, you're the one who made feel so blue..."

One example- During the campaign he stated that Hillary's personal mandate for health insurance was burdensome on the middle class. After getting elected, he made it the centerpiece of his health care proposal.

Attack ads were used again by the campaign of George H.W. Bush against Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis in the 1988 presidential election. The two most famous were the “Willie Horton” ad and an ad which ridiculed Dukakis with visuals of him looking foolish while riding in a tank. The Willie Horton Ad was especially notable for how controversial it was. The ad begins with a simple statement of Vice President Bush’s support of the death penalty. Then it describes the case of Willie Horton who was a black man convicted of murder. The ad continues to explain that Dukakis’s prison furlough program (unsupervised weekend passes from prison) released Horton 10 times and on one of those furloughs, he kidnapped a young couple, stabbed the boy and “repeatedly” raped the girl. Then the ad ends with this line “Weekend prison passes. Dukakis on crime.”[2]

Telling us Obama looks funny is personal, telling us his healthcare legislation sucks or his moratorium on drilling or the mosque is not.
GHW Bush won his first term because he bloodied up Dukakis with ads put out by Lee Atwater, then proceeded to do nothing to respond in 92. The dems won congress in 2006 by bloodying Bush personally (who didn't respond due to "the new tone", much like Pence and you seem to want), then slaughtered McCain by tying him to Bush.
Sorry, you simply don't know the history of winning (and losing) campaigns.
