I can still see Granma and Grandpa’s stern eye.
I remember going to church when it was 99 outside, no air conditioning, no electric fans, just those cardboard fans with the stick handle.
You still wore a coat and a tie, even when you were as little as I was.
They took it seriously.
We had our 50 year high school reunion 11 years ago and I still am highly impressed at how deeply religious my classmates are to this day. Probably because I was the only rogue in the class. It made me realize every one of them was a better person than I, regardless of where we rated in terms of income, property, etc.
That was a different day. There still are a lot of really good people in this country but there are also a huge number that do not have the values of those who lived in those days and I really believe that when they get hungry enough or cold and wet enough that they will behave like savages.
No Dad or Mom, Granddad or Grandmother to say “That is immoral and no boy of mine is going to do that.”

I 'grew up'(using the term loosely) in the 60's-70's so I do have a few scary memories of being found out by Gramps and given a sound flogging before being handed over to dad for another dose.
Unfortunately,as society pushes God out it also looses much moral authority and respect for elders.These days Granpa and Granma are more likely to be cloistering themselves away from a nasty society where they do not feel safe.
You are entirely right.
There are many feral humans now who will not hesitate to act worse than beasts of the field should they be hungry, cold or threatened with hunger or cold.
Or no electricity. Or the loss of HUD, foodstamps, their druges, alcohol, cigarettes, electronic entertainment, etc.
The population today is larded with amoral humans who already act worse than animals.
When things get rough, it will not be a pretty sight.
