If marriage were not an institution, your argument might make sense. But when one goes after an institution that is so deeply grounded in civilization, one inevitably takes a wreckingball to a structure that is so unimaginably complicated that one also destroys many other structures that are invisibly connected to it. This is Jacobinism. The destruction of monarchy was easy to conceptionalize, but the consequences incalculable.
