AUSTIN, Texas, Aug 9 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama attacked the economic policies of his Republican predecessor George W. Bush in Bush's home state on Monday as evidence of the way Republicans would operate if given power in Nov. 2 U.S. congressional elections.
At a fund-raising event for Democrats in Dallas, where Bush now lives, Obama said the former president's "disastrous" policies had driven the U.S. economy into the ground and turned budget surpluses into deficits.
Obama defended his repeated references to Bush's policies, saying they were necessary to remind Americans of the weak economy he inherited from Bush in January 2009.
"The policies that crashed the economy, that undercut the middle class, that mortgaged our future, do we really want to go back to that, or do we keep moving our country forward?" Obama said at another fund-raising event in Austin, referring to Bush's eight years as president.
In reminding voters about the policies of the unpopular Bush, Obama is trying to protect his fellow Democrats' majorities in Congress and limit anticipated Republican gains.
On Nov. 2, voters will choose all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 37 members of the 100-seat Senate.
Republicans say they doubt Obama's effort to cite Bush as a reason to vote against them in November will work because Americans are more concerned about getting or keeping a job.
"When we talk about this 'going back' thing, I notice that some Republicans say, 'Well, he just wants to bash the previous administration, he's looking backwards.' ... No, no, no. The reason we're focused on it is because the other side isn't offering anything new," Obama said in Austin.

Zero, the enemy of America, is right to an extent. The Stupid Party isn’t offering anything new. Where oh where are conservative republican leaders?
Just like Al Gore, Obama only comes to Texas to take money. Otherwise we’re a pox on his blue state landscape and he ignores us and our needs. No accident he chose UT. It’s about the only place in Texas you can gather an Obama adoring crowd.
I can only pray that the AnnointedIdiot continues to use the worn out “It’s Bush’s Fault” deflection mechanism during the 2012 presidential campaign(s)...... =.=
It’s astounding that after two years Barry and Axelrod can’t update their stock teleprompter boilerplate. Barry is in deep, deep denial if he can’t take responsibility for frittering away trillions of dollars with no benefit to the public. It’s as if he secretly wants to resign, but is too scared to jump off of the moving train.
Whining again. Real Texans would have walked out on the liar.
Furthermore, reality is, it is the policies of the Democrats that caused the problem within the economy he "inherited". Those being Fannie and Freddie, it was DEMs that placed the regulations that forced over lending. It was furthermore DEMs who pushed for higher minimum wage laws in 2007 (thus spiking unemployment higher, as it always does). The worst part of it all is the RNC runs from this debate instead of setting the premise.
Somehow I can’t generate sympathy for Bush considering that he and Cheney could have prevented Obama’s ascendancy to the WH, especially when he keeps quiet.
Yes, Bush’s Fault that we are in this mess.
And idiocy knows no bounds too.....
*No, no, no. The reason we’re focused on it is because the other side isn’t offering anything new,” Obama said in Austin.*
It also conveniently takes the focus off of your own sh*t policies, asshat.
Nice logic, too...”Hey, our policies suck, but because they don’t have anything new YOU’RE STUCK WITH THEM! AHAHAHAHA.”
I’d really like the Republicans to go back to something OLD, like the Constitution!!!!
You are so right. I am frustrated at the lack of response to this idiots claims that conservative ideas drove the car in the ditch. Big Goverment regulatin hurts job creation and this is proof.
We were arguing during the stimulus debate that we cans spend 1/5th of the money for the if not better results. But the Kenyan wanted to give money away to special interest and spend 1 trillion and look at where we are at.
The problem is no one is reminding the american people that our “obstructionism” was simply pointing out that the stimulus was flushing money down the toilet.
Wrong, real Terxans wouild have never attended to begin with! Long live Texas!
My thumbs are too big for this keypad. Damn blackberry! Didn’t want you to think I was an illiterate Texan!
So, Obama, are you upset with Bush 1 or Bush 2, or can you just not handle the job? Speak up, squirt.
