But they didn’t have to do it to women and kids. They were fighting a standing army. The north were cowards for fighting women and children and destroying their homes and stealing their food supply. Sherman was a monster and you can deny it all you want. Its a fact.

Well said! Its the northern liberals who are invading the south and bringing their politics and borishness and prejudices with them that is destroying the southern way of life. For the most part the south has a bunch better relationship with blacks than the north does.

How is ‘for the most part’ measured?

The south simply could not stand on its own. It lacked the infrastructure and the resolve to build the infrastructure necessary to provide for itself.

Oh my, how you underestimate the will and toughness of the southern people. Of course we probably couldn't now because we have been invaded by illegal aliens and yankees but back than, they definitely could have done it.

It's as if they were raised with anti-Southern propaganda, and never made the effort to cure themselves of their ignorance as adults.

Thats it in a nutshell. There are so many seemingly harmless comments right here on FR that portray southerners as stupid inbred hillbillies, that it makes my blood boil. I watched a documentary on TV once that put the blame on some yankee news guy who came to Appalachia to write a book on the southern people and he came here with preconcieved notions and because he was met with suspicion, went back and wrote a book very unflattering to the south and her people. The narrator said that because the southern mountainous regions were so isolated and inaccessible, the book became the accepted word about the south and it stuck. To me, the southern people are a gentle, quiet sort of people who would give you the shirt off their back, but live life at a slower gentler pace. They have a LOT of pride. Southern hospitality is real. I'm talking about the true southerners, not the transplants and illegals and prejudiced riffraff that have moved here and then trash us and try to change our beloved southland.

t would be interesting to consider what this country would be like now if the Confederacy had won and its Constitution were used as the basis for governance:

It would have been fine as long as the yankees would have left us alone. Slavery would have failed anyway. There were many many antislavery southerners. It would have been voted out eventually.

AMEN! One need only look at Taxachussetts, Michigan, etc, to see what the whole nation would look like without the voters in the south and western (except the coast) parts of the country. Now we are going to hear about how the northeast contributes the most money to the federal government. Maybe so, but they are also the biggest users of the federal dollar.

Myth. Forrest's cavalry had black troopers, most of whom were his possession prior to the war.

The massacre at Ft. Pillow is no myth.

What are you talking about?

I’ve never denied Sherman was a monster, and nothing in my post said anything different.

Maybe Memphis. What I am saying is that the southern cities are still a lot more conservative than the northern cities. You just don’t have the trouble here that you have up north. And then, seems like when there is trouble, our cities are borrowed to stage their NBP, etc. meetings. I’m sure you can find some exceptions. There are exceptions to every rule.

You seemed to think it was ok as long as they won the war.

Apparently you underestimate their strength as well, judging by your comment in #162. “destroying the southern way of life”? Seriously?

“You seemed to think it was ok as long as they won the war.”

Not at all “OK.”

But the most brutal and violent do often win the wars. It’s an effective tactic.

I see it in Israel -— we fight like gentlemen, trying to save innocent lives. The muslims fight like savages, randomly killing children and innocent people.

It’s a difficult conundrum, and I wonder if it is time to take the gloves off.

Uh huh. Here's The Annual report of the Secretary of the Treasury on the state of the finances for 1860. It has a complete breakdown of federal expenditures. Perhaps you can point out where over 50% of the money is going to benefit the north.

I didn't write the article that I linked.

Perhaps this will shed light on how tariffs helped the North at the South's expense:

If that resource isn't helpful enough, do your own research.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my article on Jews and the Confederacy.

someone asked for some evidence that Sherman hated Jews. here it is, no room for many such facts in original article.

December 17, is the anniversary of the worst official act of anti-Semitism in American history.

On that day in 1862, in the midst of the Civil War, Union general Ulysses S. Grant issued his infamous “General Order # 11,” expelling all Jews “as a class” from his conquered territories within 24 hours.

A few months earlier, on 11 August, General William Tecumseh Sherman had warned in a letter to the Adjutant General of the Union Army that “the country will swarm with dishonest Jews” if continued trade in cotton is encouraged. (Sherman, in a letter written in 1858, had described Jews as “…without pity, soul, heart, or bowels of compassion…”).

And Grant also issued orders on 9 and 10 November 1862 banning southward travel in general, stating that “the Israelites especially should be kept out… no Jews are to be permitted to travel on the railroad southward from any point. They may go north and be encouraged in it; but they are such an intolerable nuisance, that the department must be purged of them”.

As a result of Grant’s expulsion order, Jewish families were forced out of their homes in Paducah, Kentucky, Holly Springs and Oxford Mississippi, and a few were sent to prison. When some Jewish victims protested to President Lincoln, the Attorney General Edward Bates advised the President that he was indifferent to such objections, “myself feeling no particular interest in the subject.”

Nevertheless, on 4 January, 1863, Lincoln had Grant’s odious order rescinded, but by then, some Jewish families in the area had been expelled, humiliated, terrified, and jailed, and some stripped of their possessions.

As Bertram W. Korn writes in his classic work, “American Jewry and the Civil War (1951),

They still tell stories of the expulsion in Paducah, Ky.: of the hurried departure
by riverboat up the Ohio to Cincinnati; of a baby almost left behind in the haste
and confusion and tossed bodily into the boat; of two dying women permitted to
femain behind in neighbors’ care. Thirty men and their families were expelled
from Paducah, and according to affidavits by some of “the most respectable Union
citizens of the city,” the deportees “had at no time been engaged in trade within
the active lines of General Grant…” Two had already served brief enlistments in
the Union army.

On 21 January, Union General-in-Chief Henry W. Halleck wrote to Grant to explain the rescission of the order, stating that “The President has no objection to your expelling traitors and Jew peddlers, which, I suppose was the object of your order; but as it in terms proscribed an entire religious class, some of whom are fighting in our ranks, , the President deemed it necessary to revoke it.”

Captain Philip Trounstine of the Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, being unable in good conscience to round up and expel his fellow Jews, resigned his army commission, saying he could “no longer bear the Taunts and malice of his fellow officers… brought on by … that order.”

The officials responsible for the United States government’s most vicious anti-Jewish actions ever were never dismissed, admonished or, apparently, even officially criticized for the religious persecution they inflicted on innocent citizens.
