BRASILIA (Reuters) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has called on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to allow a woman sentenced in Iran to death by stoning to accept an offer of asylum in Brazil, local media reported.
The sentence imposed on Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani for an extra-marital relationship, which she denies, has caused an international outcry. It has been suspended pending a review by Iran's judiciary but could still be carried out.
"I call on the supreme leader of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to permit Brazil to grant asylum to this woman," state radio reported him as saying on Saturday.
The two nations have drawn closer this year after Brazil pioneered diplomatic efforts backing Iran's uranium enrichment work, which Tehran says it needs to produce power and for medical purposes. Many Western nations believe it is a front for developing a nuclear bomb.

At first I thought it said ‘Britain’ offers asylum. Then I laughed a little, a sad laugh. I thought Ashitiani is still in prison? I hope they can free her, but will she ever be safe?
THE WOMAN that is on this weeks cover of Time magazine with her nose cut off by the Taliban (they also cut off her ears...er, that was her family who are Taliban) is now in a safe hoouse and has security 24/7 by the group that rescued her.
Isn’t Islam wonderful???
“I thought Ashitiani is still in prison? “
Last I heard, she is
Nooooooooo... it S____ks to lowest hades. Sorry if by slim chance this offends anyone of muslim faith. Any so-called religion that brutally treats and kills women for the same sins the men commit is but scum from the septic tank. Allah is the false moon god anyway and mohammed was a delusional pedophile. Face reality--thats what it is!
PS. Not directed at you ex-hippie--FYI!
If they allow asylum in other countries they lose their power of fear over the people, never happen.
Its a religion of hate and fear.
I can’t imagine she’ll be safe in or out. And where’s the leftie outcry? The feminists to her rescue?
Dear God, I missed that. Some family. Thank God she's been rescued, but at what cost to her beforehand? This is the very kind of thing that should rile and mobilize feminists everywhere. Cue the crickets (the crickets are getting tired...).
Yeah, but next time....tell us how you REALLY feel...don’t hold back.ha.
Oh my, it’s hard to watch. And how about those ‘wonderful’ comments posted to the sight suggesting there’s no evidence to blame Taliban for this, that they’ve become scapegoats.
If she were to leave the country, she would never see her children again. That would be an agonizing choice.
The sad part is the the Iranian women that are to be stoned would probably cast the first stone at anothet woman.
I thought it had been reported this morning that she had ‘diappeared’. . .on her way to Brazil? Or. . .they prepared the whole for her in the woods? Or, is this another case. . .not sure; and no time to look right now; but comments speak to the ‘barbaric’ of what is inlcuded by ‘sharia’ per Islamism.
This is a two edged sword. It makes Iran look like its full of slaves suffering islamic torture, when the reality it that there are enough of these “slaves” to overthrow the government if they wanted to.
Give the Iranians a couple of days to kill the mullahs and thier troops or they all die. If not we will be the recipient of same.
