Listening to the Prime Ministers remarks given yesterday in Ankara, I felt a distinct sense of déjà vu. It reminded me a great deal of Barack Obamas controversial address to the Muslim world in Cairo in June last year, where he condemned the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, which sparked a downward spiral of relations with Americas closest ally in the Middle East, which has yet to fully recover.
I fear the PMs comments on Israel and Gaza could have a very similar long-term effect, with a significant deterioration of ties between London and Jerusalem. In international relations, a single throw away remark can wreak havoc upon the strongest of partnerships, carefully crafted over the course of decades but potentially undone in the space of a 30-minute speech. Here is what the PM said to his Turkish audience:

There is supposed to be a gas line going through Turkey to Europe. Could be why all of this bowing to Turkey is going one. The suicidal Europeans actually want to add Turkey to the European Union. Can you believe that?
LOTS of gas lines, not just one and Turks control that area, so EU and the West need Turkey close. Think of what can happen once US pulls out of the Middle East without a strong hand in the region (Turkey). We can’t spend hundreds of billions year after year over there so we will have to scale down drastically

Trying to make new friends by offending your current friends didn’t even work in High school. Most kids who tried it soon found they were sitting at the lunch table alone. Why these “smart” guys think it will work better in foreign relations is beyond me. Hey, and generally I like Cameron.
