BOSTON Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry is docking his family's new $7 million yacht in neighboring Rhode Island, saving roughly $500,000 in Bay State taxes.
The Boston Herald reported Friday the 76-foot, New Zealand-built sloop has two cabins, a pilot house fitted with a wet bar and cold wine storage. It is owned by a limited liability corporation in Pittsburgh, the longtime home of Kerry's wife, philanthropist Teresa Heinz Kerry.
If the boat were docked at the couple's summer vacation home on Nantucket, they would be liable for $437,500 in one-time sales tax. They'd also have to pay $70,000 in annual excise taxes.
Instead, Rhode Island has repealed those taxes.
A Kerry spokesman says the boat is being kept at Newport Shipyard not for tax reasons, but "for long-term maintenance, upkeep and charter purposes."

Normally I wouldn’t care. I expect people, especially rich ones, to reduce their tax liability as much as is legally possible. It only becomes a problem when the person is a big-government liberal who tells us taxes are a good thing because of all the government services they provide. It’s hard to find a rich, big-government liberal who’s not a hypocrite.
Oh, I certainly do blame the Democrats for avoiding taxes as they are the ones that are constantly ranting and raving how we don't pay enough in taxes.
And according to Joe Biden 'paying taxes is patriotic'.
Sorry, John Kerry is scum and a hypocrite for avoiding his state tax in this regard.
Prior to July 4th the Mass st police stake out the NH fireworks retailers. They then radio the plate # and vehicle description to the waiting trooper just over the state in Mass.
Their fireworks are then confiscated and they are sometimes fined.
All of the largest fireworks stores are located with 2 miles of the MA/NH border. This is also the case for the largest shopping malls and race track. The largest NH state liquor stores are actually part of the rest stops on I93 and I95 north/south.
A couple months ago casino gambling came up for a vote in NH. Two out of the four propossed sites were within 2 miles of the MA border. The owners of Rockingham race track(horses) have been pushung for casnio gambling for 20+ years. Their track is on the first exit going north on rt 93 from MA into NH.
Can we question his patriotism now?
I was going to add the same thing on the comment section: It’s legal and he has the right to do that, but as the Senator of that state and as one asking for higher taxes for the rich...
That’s a really nice boat! Wish I could afford one.
Massachusetts. nuff said.
Howie Carr is going to have a ball with this story.
Well said. I agree.
Sure, they’re hypocrites, but I still don’t blame them for avoiding taxes.
What I blame them for is legislating those taxes.
That’s what makes them so detestable, imo.

He’ll be keeping the new sloop right next to the Hinckley 44 in Rhode Island...
The best part is that now MA voters can see how much of a slimeball he really is.
