Sherrod Says She'd Love to Talk Race With Obama
ABC News ^ | 7-22-10

Posted on 07/22/2010 5:15:17 AM PDT by SJackson

Former Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod said Thursday she wants to discuss racial issues with President Obama, who's "not someone who has experienced some of the things I've experienced in life."

But she also said on morning news shows she feels there is no need for Obama to apologize for her wretched week, which started with a conservative blogger posting controversial remarks she made, and led to her ouster as an Agriculture Department official and then, ultimately, apologies from both the White House and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

...snip...

Sherrod said of Obama: "I'd like to help him see some of the things that he could do in the future."

"I really regret what they did. But as I said before, he's my president," Sherrod said. "When you get it down to where the rubber meets the road, I think you need to understand a little more what life is like. I'd love to talk to him, though, or people in his administration ... to help them understand."

Sir, I’m asking for *YOUR* opinion. No amount of homework I can do will give me that.

I don't have an opinion about Reagan as it relates to Pigford because he's not mentioned in the class action lawsuit and the lawsuit wasn't initiated until 5-6 years after he left office. If you had at least bothered to educate yourself about the case you'd know that.

Everyone with a modicum of intelligence can see your ad hominems, condescension and invective for the pathetic little dodges they are.

Lol! Even the Pigford claimants aren't blaming RR Westbrook, so what is it exactly am I supposed to be dodging from?

as you well know Capt ..the south is white and black...shared and divided...not that the north is any different...just less blacks...had they more blacks they would treat them worse...they get juiced up over minor black stuff like busing in Boston for example where blacks are a just a few raisins in a punchbowl of Irish oatmeal and Italian cappelini compared to the Deep south where blacks are 30-40% of the total population.

Black and white southerners who used to share quite similar social values have since the early 70s voted quite differently....thank you John Tower-Trent Lott-Jesse Helms etc

Whites in Alabama and Mississippi vote GOP 88% of the time...highest in the country....yes..quite a bit more than even vaunted Utah.

Blacks in Mississippi and Alabama vote 98% Democrat..again the highest in the country.

But still...whenever we go down to Jackson for family stuff several times a year my young kids and my Murfreesboro wife comments how much friendlier black people are in Mississippi than in Nashville even though Jackson is known for horrifying crime rates for anyone who lives there. You are just less likely to get that Spike Lee looking through you stare like you get up north on occasion and in Nashville now too.

You know why?

We are used to each other. We may be at ends politically and don't interbreed so much in Mississippi like up north and in Nashville now but neither blacks nor whites in Mississippi or Alabama have ever been able to escape one another given the parity in numbers. Plus it's the cultural thing ..manners....blacks down in the deep south know full well that every white was not in the Klan and nor do whites hate them for being black.

They fear the black community a bit for their vote and the crime but not just for what they look like (non white)...that has always been the myth of the left.

I would prefer to live with 40% black folks in Mississippi than 10% in New York City....the attitudes..as a southern white man...no question...and aside from their voting...I probably have more in common with them...at least I did as a boy in the 60s...but things have changed...thug culture....does throw a wrench in that nostalgia.

Right now we are all sweating no matter what color you are...100 degrees in Nashville.

Nor am I surprised to be taking the opposite posiition than you on the issue of civil rights

the Sherrod tape has more to do with her own bigotry and socialist bent than it does your canard of civil rights.

but yes....damn right I do not share your views on civil rights...which means preference for blacks and punishment for whites ad infintum

it's the road to ruin and has no place in conservatism...redress for blacks has been exploited by the 1964 CRA onwards into one big racket which gives them and other minorities tyrannical power over the majority which in turn kills our ability to deal with anything non white and non Christian...and even to some degree non male and non heterosexual

it's a boondoggle and has literally killed black values culture which was quite strong in youth....you know...back when all whites were mean to blacks...that time right...before we learned to suck up and roll over....the black family...almost gone...black crime..good God, it's like a third world country

You can have your basatardized version of "civil rights", in many ways it's worse than segregation...at least on the black family and crime there is no doubt

a small burgeoning continuing liberal black middle class doesn't offset the large collapse elsewhere

We don't agree on the Civil War and the Confederacy, but I'll agree the people of Mississippi are too often victims of unfair stereotyping. If there wasn't a Mississippi, the holier than thou left wing would have to invent it to give vent to their fraudulent moral superiority.

I don't believe that I have ever known anybody who had a more Christian, level-headed or charitable attitude toward race relations than my Southern grandmother. Growing up, I heard the story of how my grandparents in Alabama took in their next door neighbor black family when their house was destroyed by a tornado. I think you might be on to something concerning the bad effects of urbanization on everybody. Not much looking after your neighbor in big cities. I think I would rather endure the material hardships of my tenant farming grandparents' generation than the spiritual poverty of today.

Did any of you see Pat Cadell on Hannity’s show this past week? He was in Charleston, I believe. As you know, he was in the midst of the civil rights movement during the ‘60s.

He stated more than once...and was emphatic...that the south is the most integrated, and most receptive, to persons of color than anywhere else in the country. Of course, that’s not a direct quote, but it’s close to it.

Having grown up during those times in the south...spending a lot of time there now...and now living in Portland, OR...which is the polar opposite of the south...I believe it to be true.

I think a bigger contrast than North/South is rural/suburban versus urban/suburban. In many the cases the South tends to be more harmonious because the South is more rural and thus more resistant to the secular dehumanizing tendencies in urban and suburban culture.

That's a scarecrow of your own imagination. Since when does providing poor blacks access to our legal system equal 'punishment' for whites ad infintum? Ease up on the Lincoln Rockwell a little bit.

...redress for blacks has been exploited by the 1964 CRA onwards into one big racket which gives them and other minorities tyrannical power over the majority which in turn kills our ability to deal with anything non white and non Christian...and even to some degree non male and non heterosexual.

So you're a segregationist, no surprise here. You wear your sense of entitlement on your sleeve.

...You can have your basatardized version of "civil rights", in many ways it's worse than segregation...

Thats rich. Name one conservative leader alive today who thinks we should undo the Civil Rights Act.

I think you have a very good point.

I was so happy to hear Cadell portray the South that I have known correctly, though. That rarely ever happens. ;o)
