As soon as much of the available evidence suggested that Shirley Sherrod had become the victim of a rush to judgment by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, it became clear President Barack Obama had a mushrooming political problem on his hands.
Sherrod went from being the villain of the piece to a figure drawing great empathy from millions, not the least of which was conservative talk show host Glen Beck.
And among those who were most closely watching the presidents handling of affair were important members of the presidents base, people he could ill afford to alienate: African Americans and liberals.
While Obama remains popular, his poll numbers are significantly lower than they were earlier in the year. His support among independents who helped propel him to the presidency has steadily eroded.
That was worrisome enough for Democrats during a mid-term election year.
But then the Sherrod affair threatened to hurt the president with some of the most members of the Democratic base.

This was supposed to be a lefty sandbag job. Not working too well for them, is it?
They’ll be pissed for a few days; but they’ll soon be back on the plantation.

FLASHBACK:
“I don’t know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that [Gates case]. But I think it’s fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home; and, number three, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there’s a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately. That’s just a fact.”
“While Obama remains popular, his poll numbers are significantly lower than they were earlier in the year.”
LMAO at that inane statement.
“While Obama remains popular”
Would some objective observer please define “popular”? I always thought that the minimum measure of political popularity were polls showing 51% of the people think you are doing a good job. Is this asshat referencing the popularity Mr. Skittles enjoys at all his parties? If he is so popular, why don’t Dems want him to campaign for them? Popular? Popular? The rediculous assumptions dumped onto the reader by the “Journolistos” is rather sickening.
Hmm. NPR isn't getting enough taxpayer money to edit their programs now?
Good one. I thought of that too.
The real story is that this White House has let itself be manipulated by Andrew Breitbart! And it will use this manipulation as an excuse for its actions!
I am sure our real enemies are taking notes.
I think it worked too well for them!
So, she never did anything racist then? I don’t get it.
Clever recycling there!
Goerge Orwell was right - he was just a generation or two off...
