I was going to send this as a private reply, but decided not to. I heard it said some years ago that the only stupid question is the one not asked.

Okay then. Although I discovered this wonderful board some 2-1/2 years ago, I’m still such a newbie. Here’s my question - when I see someone post Ping, does that mean add them to the list or what? I asked my IT boyfriend awhile back what ping means. (big mistake - ever heard of someone who, when you ask them what time it is, explains the history of clocks???) He went into a long tech explanation of the internet and ether world, which I know isn’t meant here.

So don’t laugh - I’m still learning the lingo here on FR. (Having been a cheerleader in my school days) I thought for a long time that when someone posted Ping, it meant “high five”, “bravo” or similar.

There - I’ve admitted my ignorance for everyone to see! Hey, seems fitting in light of Glenn’s show today about telling no lies :-)) I love all of you FReepers, you’ve been, and continue to be, a shining light more than you know.

“Ping” is the alert to call people on the list to a thread. As you can see I generally don’t use the term but instead post a comment to everyone on the list. In the case of the Beck TV thread its just a means of announcing that the thread has been posted and is active.

When someone posts “Ping” they’re simply calling others who asked to be “Pinged” to a thread.
