Last year I got a call from my bank due to a suspicious charge to my acct. Yes, it was only $5, but they had had their data center red-flag all charges from this shady outfit. The rep told me scammers will often start out with a small charge like that, to see if it is noticed. If neither you nor your bank notices, they might go for a much bigger charge.

I check my acct online several times a month. Your info passes through many hands, and it only takes one crook.

I got a call last year from the credit union about a VISA charge of $.99

evidently they were tipped off and watching- the charge was to purchase a NYT article which is the LAST thing I would ever do

Scammers often try to charge something small- then go for the big time
