Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston Reveal Secret Engagement

Couple kept on-again relationship secret from Sarah Palin

Bristol Palin was worried about how she was going to tell her mother that she’s engaged to marry Levi Johnston, the father of her 18-month-old son. She solved the problem by telling a tabloid magazine. “We got engaged two weeks ago. It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents,” Palin told Us Weekly magazine in a bombshell story published Wednesday.

The magazine cover features a photo of a smiling Bristol and Levi with their son, Tripp. Inside, Bristol admits that she and Johnston had not told her parents, Sarah and Todd Palin, about the engagement. “It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board,” Bristol told the magazine. “I want her to know Levi has grown up and that he is going to be there as a dad.” ‘Redemption and forgiveness’ In a statement to NBC News, the Palins said, “Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what’s best for our children. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.” No wedding date has been set, but Caroline Schaefer, Us Weekly’s executive editor, told TODAY’s Matt Lauer Wednesday morning that the reunited young couple would like to do it quickly — possibly in the next month. Until marriage, Schaefer said, the couple are living separately and practicing abstinence. Bristol Palin, who has moved out of her parents’ house, is a spokeswoman for an abstinence-only program.

I was a 16 year old mom, (33 years ago)I too was told by my parents I was making a huge mistake. We married it lasted 14 years and two kids later. At 16, I didn’t want to listen to the wisdom of my parents. All I could see what what I wanted....... notice all the I’s above.

at 50, I see they were so right and my actions caused so much undeserved stress, and heartache to those who loved me. My kids included!

Me either. It would not surprise me if he has been paid by the ‘Palin Haters’ to get back into this girls life in hopes of getting anything they think can be used against Sarah. This kid did some low life things so I'm sure he'd do anything if the money is right. Bristol is a very naive girl.

I fail to see if the Palins’, specifically Sarah can’t manage her daughter as a MINOR, how can she properly run a country? She can’t. One or the other will be neglected. In this situation she chose to neglect her family.

“Utter nonsense.....”

Come on! Look at CLinton. Look at Obama. Look at Hitler. ALL were from dysfunctional families. Clearly there si something very wrong with the parenting skills of the Palins. Big surprise - the PARENTS aren't around to raise their kids! They're too busy for them.

“The Presidency, like parenthood is not dictatorial. The Congress, like children, often have minds of their own, and refuse leadership, often for reasons less than rational.”

You don't need to define what a President is to me. Bristol was a MINOR when she got pregnant. I hold PARENTS responsible for their kids when they are MINORS.

“To blame anyone for the free will actions of others is not a rational position. Sorry, but you are very wrong. PDS?”

I do blame PARENTS when their kids, as MINORS, get pregnant. It is PARENTS that are supposed to be raising their kids. Families fall apart when PARENTS aren't around. Mr. Mom didn't cut it. Sarah was pursuing her career - PTA then governor. Her family fell apart. Now THIS!

You can't serve to masters.

I believe the Palins are decent people. They are well intentioned. But, it's getting ridiculous the EXCUSES people like you and others make for a dysfunctional family. The Palin family is dysfunction and it is the fault of the PARENTS. We hardly need more dysfunctional families in the WH. We really need an intact NORMAL family as an example.

I am trying to be optimistic, there is a child involved and the child is better off if the parents are either married or at least have a good relationship......

I know people can change and in this case I hope Levi has.....

It’ll last as long as Levi can tolerate being Bristol’s bitch.

"How many more dysfunctional families do we need in the WH?"

It sure does seem like we've had more than our fair share, doesn't it?

The Fords were pretty normal, save for Betty's pill problem - which she did beat and managed to turned it into a positive. And, for all of Nixon's failings, his kids turned out pretty normal. Johnson's policies were horrific, but his family was pretty orthodox, up until Lynda's husband got busy with the pageant girl.

I hate to say it, but all things considered, the Bushs had a about as normal a family that have been in the White House, for a long, long time - but even that family had their share of marital scandals and drug/alcohol addiction.

Getting pregant BEFORE marriage may run in the family ... .

The Palins were married Aug 29, 1988.

Track was born April 20, 1989.

Was Sarah Palin was 7 weeks pregnant when they married?

Or should we ASSUME this was a “premature” baby?

Maybe the daughter takes after her Mom?

Me too.

I have a friend who married a guy who was a basic bum. My dad gave them six months.

That was 1982 and they are still together and very happy.

Another smart, pretty, girl with a lot of potential who ended up marrying a bum. Always a shame.

OK, the kid is still a kid. He had sex with Bristol outside of marriage, and apparently didn’t use protection. That already made him untrustworthy and a little bit stupid.

But that in some ways is what a lot of kids his age are. I’ve seen people who at his age I wouldn’t want within 100 feet of my daughter, who are now grown men married with children and excellent examples for others.

So I pray that Levi has seen the light, and that through his relationship with God, Bristol, his child, and the Palins, he will become the man God intends him to be.

I believe in redemption.

I feel like they overplayed that “she’s afraid to tell”, since in the article it becomes clear she HAS told, and that Sarah has made a statement which doesn’t sound at all angry.

Whatever his faults, he’s manning up and committing himself to parenting his child and caring for the mother. Give the boy a break, people, he’s heading in the right direction. Sure, having a potential President as mother-in-law is cool, but he’s marrying Bristol, not Sarah.

I don’t remember Sarah Palin ever responding “furiously” to Levi. In fact, I remember her being a pillar of discretion, and even her comments about being a porn star didn’t seem made in a fit of rage. They were a reasonable description of how he was living his life.

Stuff like this causes gray hair and premature aging for parents. Sympathy for Sarah and her husband.

If that is true then Sarah and Todd took responsibility for their actions and have made a long lasting marriage. Kids are going to do stupid things sometimes. Even kids from good families.

Kids with good values and character do NOT get pregnant!

Kids who are sinless to not get pregnant. However, it turns out that some kids with good values and character are actually sinners, and occasionally the sin they engage in is an illicit act of sex.

I've seen enough decent kids raised by good families end up unwed parents to know that people make mistakes (of course, I've seen otherwise decent adults fall into illicit sexual affairs as well).

For all I know, the only reason I made it to marriage a virgin was that I didn't have any obviously willing participants for sex available when I might have been weak.

IMHO itis Sarah Palin’s way to keep Levi on a tight chain.
