He critiqued such kissing up and criticized "cheap grace," by which an intellectual assent to Christian truth seems sufficient: No confession, repentance, discipleship, or discipline needed.

I just watched a short biography of Bonhoeffer available at Netflix. It was very interesting. He taught his theology students that when they read the bible, God is speaking to them, personally. It was a concept many did not consider in those times.
