I’m thinking that one of the women might have had a mirror with them. If so, they could have used it to reflect the spotlight into the eyes of the spotlight crew. And if they didn’t like it, they’d simply have to shine the light in a direction they couldn’t reach for reflection (ie: upwards, like they were supposed to do)
