I always thought it was strange how so many creatures could die all at once and decompose in a great big heap;)

Take lebenteengazillion teeny-tiny little bacteria and you can do it. They grow quite well in Sunlight and water ~ even trapping their own sand and turning into stromatolites. Get enough of those, pile enough junk on top of them and next thing you know (few billion years) you have oil.

There were never enough dinosaurs or plants to do the trick.
