It’s easy to get SSI (Social Security Income). All one has to do is have themselves or their child “diagnosed” with ADD/ADHD (Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity Disorder).
Isn’t SSI (which is Supplemental Security Income, not Social Security) a different, entirely seperate program from Social Security?
I know Social Security (and SS Disability, which is early retirement due to medical issues) is for people who have worked and paid into the system.
I also know (or think I know) that SSI is for those who have NOT worked or paid into Social Security (not long enough anyway), so I thought they were entirely seperate programs.
And if that’s the case, then the two - SS & SSI - are not related.
I just double checked and I was correct. SSI is funded by general taxes, NOT Social Security taxes, so it’s an entirely seperate program.
The names of the program are so similar though, and so confusing. SSI is Supplemental Security Income. SS and SSD is Social Security retirement (either old age or medically retired/disabled) and ONLY for those who worked and paid into the system.
I know the rules for SS/SSD were extremely strict when I applied 13 years ago, and I’ve heard those rules are still very tight even now, but I have also heard that SSI is like food stamps; ask and ye shall receive.
Now there's a perverse incentive... get your kids to act crazy - or damage them - to win state cash. Sick. I'd rather give money to parents who are raising emotionally healthy children... What you reward, you get more of...
