Iowa Republican: Barton was right to say BP suffered 'shakedown' at White House (Steve King)
The Hill ^ | 6/21/10 | Mike Obrien

One Republican lawmaker said Monday he agreed with Rep. Joe Barton's (R-Texas) apology to BP.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said he thought Barton was right to call the Obama administration's effort to force BP to create a $20 billion escrow account to pay out claims to victims of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill a "shakedown."

"I think Joe Barton was spot-on when he called it a 'shakedown.' That's part of this administration's process," King said Monday on the conservative Laura Ingraham radio show.

It’s not a shakedown. I don’t think you could find a court in any of the counties/parishes adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico where this spill is happening that would not find BP guilty of criminal negligence.

However, BP has not yet actually been found guilty of ANYTHING. A shakedown is using the threat of criminal, civil or violent action to extract money from an entity WITHOUT first following the procedures for determining if the entity is guilty and, if guilty, what the amount of damages are.

If a cop threatens to give me a ticket for speeding, and he starts loudly "investigating" the crime -- oh, and he calls in to his partner and says "I've got someone in front of me that I'm going to kick his ass"--- and after all that, the cop turns and nicely asks me for $20.00, hello, that's a shakedown.

“Until Barton opened his mouth this was the gift that was going to give forever because people blamed BP and Obama and Democrat politicians. Barton hurt our cause by providing a Republican face supportive of BP thereby nullifying some of the partisan advantage we were picking up against Obama.”

Well, I can symphathize with your situation, but the words of one Congressman is not the downfall of your whole world. That, I disagree with.

I just don’t see how people are reading Barton’s statement as pro-BP. It was a sharp, biting, accurate anti-Obama statement.

It in NO WAY suggested that BP was not liable and should not be held liable by established and appropriate procedures.

I don’t think we want to live in a country where the POTUS tells corporations to pony up because he said so (and because, oh by the way, he’s sicced his stupid Attorney General on you to “investigate” you for criminal charges and he’s gone on teevee and flapped his jaws about kickingyoass).

There are established laws not handling these types of industrial accidents and the claims that they create — including laws specifically about oil spills in federal waters.

Again, I don’t see how in any way Barton’s remark was a show of support for BP. It was an Obama slam, pure and simple. And a good one.

Keep the spot light on Obama

Obama will be glad to assist.

Can't help himself...

You’re right. It’s unbelievable that people don’t seem to see that it is illegal for the government to demand this money without a court order. Even the pay czar said that people will still have to go through the courts. They aren’t going to get the money any faster and on top of that, I heard that the money is spread out over a five year period, not a lump sum. By the time the court cases are settled, they people who deserve the money will be lucky is there is anything left, that hasn’t been handed out to the FOBs (friends of Barack).

If the people are that stupid, we deserve permanent socialist dictatorship. Maybe America has gotten to that tipping point.

Palin was referring to the false attempt of the Dem-media to change the topic and make this statement some blanket Republicans statement. It isn’t and she is right, as she usually is. What’s your issue with one of the finest conservative leaders we have seen in a generation?

Exactly. If they are guilty as you charge, the courts are the place to deal with it. Not an all-powerful executive branch. This IS a shakedown, and it is highly unconstitutional. If you disagree, Freerepublic may not be the best place to visit right now.

That she sounds nearly identical to Mitch McConnell on this issue, as opposed to hammering the Obama - like Barton and King do - for his unconstitutional chicanery.

She is hammering Obama daily on FB, on FOX News, and by
calling Rahm liar saying that Barton was reading off of a GOP script.

You spend day and night posting on FR and don’t get out in the real world. You see it through a straw.

King is a good friend of mine and I do not believe for one minute that his saying the things he has been saying is a slip. I believe every word is calculated for a reason. He's tired of libs controlling the language.

This is one of the smartest people I've ever known.

I agree. He’s right in tune with Hunter and Tancredo and ME in terms of not giving into to the leftwing attack machine and political correctness.

ROFL. You been drinking?

as opposed to hammering the Obama - like Barton and King do - for his unconstitutional chicanery.

She has tore Obama a new exit hole since the spill began. We know where she stands, and it's not with the cowardly Republicans who are too afraid to call a spade a spade.

Come on now Pissant.

You're sounding totally lame here, just step back from the keyboard and take a few breaths.

Mountain.
Molehill.

She's been one of the few constantly ripping and taking him to task for his inability to do anything.

In th meantime, maybe you'll find us a statement by Hunter about this matter.

*crickets*

The Obamites seem to have themselves a bit of a catch22 here - Emmanuel said on TV yesterday that Obama “forced” BP to come across with the 20B fund - that’s as much as admitting that the fund is a shakedown, established under pressure and duress - on the other hand, if the funding wasn’t forced, Obama can’t take credit for having procured it, since it must have been produced from BP’s generosity and sense of social obligation, and that’s about the only thing he’s done so far that he might take credit for......

I’ll be awaiting your PING when she stands up for Barton.

Barton didn't even stand up for himself when Boehner and Cantor made him apologize for his apology.
