Sarah Palin: Smoking Pot Is No Big Deal
AOL ^ | 6/18/10 | Mara Gay

Posted on 06/19/2010 9:13:23 AM PDT by nmh

Sarah Palin says recreational pot smoking is "relatively speaking a minimal problem" in America.

...

"I think we need to prioritize our law enforcement efforts," she said. "If somebody's gonna smoke a joint in their house and not do anybody any harm, then perhaps there are other things our cops should be looking at to engage in and try to clean up some of the other problems we have in society."

Allen St. Pierre, the director of NORML, which supports liberalizing drug laws, said Palin's position on pot is perfectly in line with her identity as a politician.

"If you're a populist as she appears to be, it's maybe not that surprising," he told AOL News in a phone interview today.

I sure didn’t say pot is good for you.

When I was a freshman college student I was asked to narrate a student project film on marijuana.

What I didn’t realize is that the film going with my narration was a bunch of guys on my dorm floor “passing the bong.”

In my college years I “inhaled, but didn’t smoke” pot and for my dorm mates who did it “the weed” was part of their cycles of depression, alcohol abuse, sexual license etc.

They intoxicated themselves to “medicate” their pain.

Pot can take control of people’s lives but for most of the guys in my dorm, it was something they could “take and leave.” It was “recreational” and not “addictive.”

Again, don’t let anything I am saying make you believe I endorse the smoking of pot. Its just that there are limits to what we can do with laws and law enforcement to deal with it.

I was going to say that pot smokers will not be the downfall of this country then I remembered President Obama.

Seriously though, Sarah is basically right. If you saw your neighbor's kid smoking dope in the woods would you bring in law enforcement or just tell their parents?

If you say the latter you are agreeing with Sarah.

” The FReepers of today would be very be very comfortable sharing a doobie with Bill. Wow.”

Nah, only a small percentage would. But you are right about the reason for Free Republic.

Earlier in this post I stated that Palin is merely pandering to the moderate doper libertarians. It proved to be exactly that, judging by the responses, and it worked, didn’t it? ;-)

Cops do not go after dopers who smoke a joint in their home, and rarely arrest someone with a small stash OUTSIDE their home. Ask any cop.

In my life, I have met plenty of people who can have one drink, and lay off for weeks. I NEVER met a doper who could do the same. Most smoke it every day. I know because I have fired enough of them over 30 years ;-)

I smoked dope in college, quit after graduation. I ran up on some of my old bong buddies a few years later. They were still sitting around in crappy apartments, working at convenience stores and spent most of their time listening to music, convinced that rock, pop or whatever held the great mysteries of life.

It wasn't that they were dangerous or crazy or anything. It just seemed like a wasted life.

A. Can we even trust she really said this?
B. Who cares? When our Republic is gone, smoking pot might be all we have left.

The reason this bothers a lot of Freepers is that they think smoking pot turns people into liberal hippies. It’s that simple. I recall a wonderful discussion from October of 1988:

(8 guys in the room, ages 18-22, all fairly regular pot smokers)

Other guy: “Man, they will never allow pot to be legal, because it would cause a huge shift to the left in this country, and no right-winger would ever be elected again.”

Me: “How many people in this room smoke pot?”

Other guy looks around: “Everybody.”

Me: “Other than you, how many are voting for Dukakis?”

Other guy: “F*ck you, man!” Exits.

Possession: Residents may possess up to one ounce of marijuana for their own personal use in their home. Possession of 1-4 ounces is a misdemeanor, while anything over four ounces is a felony. Cultivation: The state constitution's right to privacy allows up to 24 plants to be cultivated in one's home. However, maintaining a grow operation of any size outside one's home is a felony. Sale: Selling less than one ounce is a misdemeanor; more than one ounce is a felony.

These laws should be nation wide. Realize that if you have a job that can get you a random pee test, such as a Commercial Drivers License, failing the pee test still applies. If you have the type of job that allows you to go home and smoke some pot....so what? More power to them.

Meth is a true scourge. Ugly, nasty stuff. I have never done it (that I know of!), but have seen some sad souls who have. Evil, wicked stuff that preys on the weak. Jesus would be among them in His day.

The Socon's will abandon her now.

From their point of view, if she doesn't toe the Social Conservative line, she's not a "real" conservative.

Of course, many Socons think it's OK to vote for a Democrat if they are opposed to abortion.

This needs to be posted again:

Hey, when it comes to learning things from each other here, it’s all good. That’ why Free Republic is the #1 site on my browser list. I can get more varied information here, and have more debate with real people, than any other site on the web. That doesn’t mean I don’t read all sorts of other sites, from the hard Left to the hard Right. You have to travel in big circles to get all the info you can. But here at FR, we really can talk to and respond to each other. Thanks, FRiend.

Alcohol will screw you up way more than smoking a joint.

Libertarians are too Godless to understand personal responsibility. It has nothing to do with a Police State. Join the liberals. They do not get it either.

You’re basing this on the AOL headline, “Smoking Pot Is No Big Deal”
or Palin’s actual words, “relatively speaking a minimal problem”?
