Instead, I'm beginning to think that Obama wants this disaster to become a catastrophe. He wants to destroy the economies and the people of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. They are, after all, the enemy -- red states

I don't think so. He very much needs the votes of the young environmentalist leftists, and they're growing more disillusioned with each day that features more oil-covered wildlife dead and dying. I think he just has no clue what to do.

Personally I thought all the hand-wringing over his spending "only" 20 minutes meeting with the BP CEO was idiotic. 20 minutes was 20 too many in my opinion -- what the heck is going to be accomplished by President Obama, who knows nothing whatsoever about oil wells, meeting with the CEO of BP? On the other, he could have made much better use of that 20 minutes by using it to ensure that senior staff would be reachable and prepared to respond 24/7 whenever anyone as important as the Governor of a Gulf state called. That would have been a proper function of the CEO of the United States of America; meaningless yakking with an oil company CEO accomplished absolutely nothing that couldn't have been accomplished by senior staffers trading e-mailed memos on their respective bosses' behalf.

It's certainly very harmful to President Obama's political prospects to have outlets like ABC News publishing stories quoting governors of Gulf states complaining that the federal government is being of no help whatosever, and even actively interfering, and quoting Jindal as saying he "tried" to reach the White House in an unsuccessful attempt to stop the Coast Guard from interrupting the operation of oil-sucking barges.
