Most Americans back new Arizona law, Washington Post-ABC News poll finds

Most Americans support the new, controversial Arizona law that gives police there the power to check the residency status of suspected illegal immigrants. But most also still back a program giving those here illegally the right to earn legal documentation, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Immigration has been rising in prominence as an issue and has the potential to roil party unity on both sides as Democrats and Republicans push for the upper hand in the midterm elections. Liberal Democrats are broadly against the Arizona law; moderate and conservative Democrats are more evenly split on the issue. Most staunch Republicans oppose a "path to citizenship," while a majority of other Republicans favor such a plan. At the Texas Republican convention last week, the party splintered over the issue, with moderates proposing a legalization plan through military service, and the party ultimately adding an Arizona-like measure to its plank.

Shocking /s - Actually, it is a little shocking that this is a WaPo poll. The Poll results may be found here.

They also have Obama's job performance approval at 52%, which is WAY out of line with the other mainstream polls, including Gallup, which shows him in the low 40s, just yesterday.

Most Americans support the new, controversial Arizona law

If MOST Americans support it, wouldn't that make it UNcontroversial?

Idiots can't deviate from their script, no matter what the facts say.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 24 percent of the nation’s voters strongly approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. But almost 45 percent strongly disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of minus 20.

Overall, 42 percent of voters say they approve of the president’s performanceat least somewhat . That’s his lowest level of approval yet, while 57 percent now disapprove.

Almost 50 percent of Democrats strongly approve, while 75 percent of Republicans strongly disapprove. Among those not affiliated with either major party, 12 percent strongly approve, and 52 percent strongly disapprove.

At the same time that a majority of Americans back the Arizona law, most say they support a program allowing illegal immigrants already in the United States the right to live here legally if they pay a fine and meet certain requirements. In the new poll, 57 percent support the option, close to the level in spring 2009 at the 100-day mark of Obama's presidency.

I don't believe this for a moment - all depends on precisely how the question was asked. Those supporting a "pathway to documented" are the same ones supporting McLame's re-election.

The compost is dis informing again.

They see their eventual loss on protection of the illegal alien influx, so, the try to cultivate the refugee issue for amnesty, which will make the law unenforceable.

If they can milk the refugee empathy to even a really tough "reform", the illegals will be able to file and that will make them undeportable. Then the Marxists use the bureaucracy to allow them to never complete all the requirements, bingo, amnesty.

Here’s how TOTALLY USELESS this poll is.

Scroll way down to the question which asks:

(ASKED OF REGISTERED VOTERS) If the election for the U.S. House of Representatives in November were being held today, would you vote for (the Democratic candidate) or (the Republican candidate) in your congressional district?

Now look at the response and the date:

———————Democrat———Republican
10/31/94-RV———48-——————44

We all know that in 1994 the Democrats were DECIMATED in the midterms and lost both Houses of Congress in that monumental blowout.

I'd be interested in seeing a quantitative analysis of how the Post delineates "stanch" from "other" Republicans.

I support a "path to citizenship". Of course, it's a path that starts with them going back to their home country and getting at the back of the line, like all the law-abiding potential immigrants to this country. Yep, it's a path, a very long and legal path to citizenship.

I think anybody caught here illegally should be permanently kicked out of the line, not sent to the back. But that’s just MHO.

They should NOT get “Special” priveledges just because they entered this country illegally. Where is their entry document? Without that entry A# they should not be allowed to file for a green card. Just like everyone else. Go out and come back legally.

Almost 50 percent of Democrats strongly approve, while 75 percent of Republicans strongly disapprove.

That's a very significant little factoid. That means that the majority (more than 50%) of DEMOCRATS disapprove of Obastard's performance.
