You assume she did not know better. If she were that stupid she would be dead. It was only her on that boat during the dismasting and the following hours until rescue thousands of miles at sea. From reports there was no panic and she did everything a “pro” would do.
The only questionable decision was the timing of crossing the Southern Ocean.

God spared her! I’m sure she was groomed by her parents for this. At 16 yrs you can not imagine your own mortality and mother natures cruelty.

If she were that stupid she would be dead. No. Without a special boat and equipment she'd be dead. The boat was weighted so it will be hard to scuttle. She was incapable of repairing her mast. And without her EPIRBs they'd still be searching for her. Fancy technology saved her and not capability.

When he set out in the 1968 solo Golden Globe Race. he did not know how to sail yet he made it all the way to the Indian Ocean in an unsuitable boat before storm damage forced abandoning the attempt (hmmm) (but he managed to get the boat back to port)
