Let them go. I have no need for police, aka, criminal/scum protection crew. Nor prisons. Car thieves, robbers, and up should be the duty of citizens to shoot and kill them on site, unless they are captured, where upon they can be delivered to the sheriff for hanging.
We would have a bloody few years, but after that an entire generation or two of criminals would be dead, and then things would quiet down.
Fire departments should be private companies that get paid by insurance companies. Uninsured property should be either allowed to burn, or put out with liens against the owner for cost.
Ditto EMS. Get insured, have a credit card, or go in the back seat bleeding to death in your friends car.
I could go on.
As a life long Western New Yorker this would normally set me off on a rant about liberalism, corruption, continued failure in Albany, upstate vs. downstate, etc.
But it really doesn’t bother me much today, because I’m relocating and within 2-3 months I’ll be living in TEXAS.
Oh yeah, my free advice is to SHUT IT DOWN. It will play out that yet another tax increase is passed. There will be no substantive cuts. The following year’s budget will show the same problems, as will the year after that. Nothing will change until NY veers 180 deg. off the liberal path.
Hell it is a zoo up there anyway. Probably might workout better than having the (no see bro) in charge of that (cess pool) called Nu Yark.
Their ignorance is shown by electing commies like rangel, clinton and schmuer. Man I am glad I live down South, where sanity still exist.

With all due respect Leisler, I think you missed my point (on purpose I might add). I am not calling for the elimination of police, fire, etc., only that it is a bluff.
They do it every year. Call their bluff and see what happens.
Those items I listed are all proper government duties. But there are many items that should and could be cut first, however policticians attempt to scare the people into approving more taxes.
In this high stakes poker game, the taxpayers always fold (such as you apparently are doing) because they are afraid that the world would come to an end.
We as a nation can no longer afford our government.
The one simple truth is that goverments at all levels are doing one thing and one thing well, the transfer of wealth from those that earn it to those that don’t
There is nothing in NYC you can’t get in Pittsburgh for half the price and 1/4th the aggravation.
What about mugged?
My bad. You're right. I carry a Keltec P-32 in Pittsburgh.
Were it a private company, the powers that be would be taking notes and handing out pink slips.
But, since it's a gov't entity, the "unnecessary" people will all be brought back, and likely given hardship bonuses.
Shut down the lottery? Isn’t that one of the few things that actually generates a positive cash flow to the State?
It's time to build the wall... around NY.
I’ve lived in both the South and, now, the North, and the South is definitely the more enlightened, civilized side of the Mason-Dixon line.
