The Rabbi did not force Helen Thomas to say anything. His question to her was something along the lines of "What do you think about Israel?" Her answer was wholly her own, given of her own volition. She exercised her right of free speech and had to face the consequences.
The Rabbi who asked the question asked exactly the same question of several other people he encountered at the White House that day (Jewish Heritage Day, I believe). Apparently no one else answered the way she did.
But, of course, it's the Rabbi's fault.
