Health law could ban low-cost plans (more than 1 million to lose insurance in September)
Politico ^ | June 8, 2010 | Jennifer Haberkorn

Part of the health care overhaul due to kick in this September could strip more than 1 million people of their insurance coverage, violating a key goal of President Barack Obama’s reforms.

Under the provision, insurance companies will no longer be able to apply broad annual caps on the amount of money they pay out on health policies. Employer groups say the ban could essentially wipe out a niche insurance market that many part-time workers and retail and restaurant employees have come to rely on.

This market’s limited-benefit plans, also called mini-med plans, are priced low because they can, among other things, restrict the number of covered doctor visits or impose a maximum on insurance payouts in a year. The plans are commonly offered by retail or restaurant companies to low-wage workers who cannot afford more expensive, comprehensive coverage.

Depending on how strictly the administration implements the provision, the ban could in effect outlaw the plans or make them so restrictive that insurance companies would raise rates to the point they become unaffordable.

A cadre of employers and trade associations, including 7-Eleven, Lowe’s, the National Restaurant Association, the National Retail Federation and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, have asked the administration to allow the plans — at least through 2014, when the insurance exchanges are set up and tax credits become available for low-wage workers.

The struggle over the provision highlights the importance of the new law’s implementation timetable and the way its parts interlock with one another. The legislation was front-loaded with consumer-friendly reforms, such as the ban on most annual limits, in hopes the law would become more popular. Polls show the legislation is supported by about half the public.

Even the Republicans should have the wits to run ads in September telling voters that more than a million people will LOSE health insurance thanks to Obamacare.

It is a general pattern of liberals to mandate gold-plated benefits that people or employers (remember them?) cannot afford. They have hiked the minimum wage and created many ways for employees to sue their employers. The result is that only the government is creating jobs.

I was going to say “unintended consequences”, but is it?

These are the results you have when you allow your politicians to vote on legislation that they have not read. We need a law that requires Congress to read the laws they vote on..

Any federal version of health care is unconstitutional since Article 1 Section 8 does not specifically list regulating health care as an enumerated power! People are not bound to comply with an unconstitutional act!

It's an intended conseuence, but not one anyone in Congress or this Regime can readily understand.

There were no broad based open public hearings on the legislation, so this sort of thing simply isn't surprising.

The fact that Obamakkkare is starting out by canceling insurance on new borns and poor people first is probably a surprise to most Democrats, but not to Republicans.

After all, we expect nothing better than that out of our least capable citizens.

Let's see Jon Stewart whine about coverage for single-mom-of-three housekeepers now!

PWNED!

Aloud and in session before voting on them!

Our own company plan eliminated chiropractic care (which we actually use in a plant where people work with machinery, packing and shipping product) in order to cover mandates for substance abuse— which we can't use because our employees are actually drug tested to get and keep their jobs here.

Even the Republicans should have the wits to run ads in September telling voters that more than a million people will LOSE health insurance thanks to Obamacare.

They can have (modified as necessary) the following script from me for free:

Earlier this year, an overwhelming majority of the American people told President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, [local candidate(s)], and the rest of the Democrat Congress "no" to the government takeover of health insurance.

Every Republican stood with the people, voting against the takeover. But the Democrats pushed ahead anyway, telling us that they had to pass the bill to find out what was in it.

They passed the bill, and now we're starting to find out what was in it.

One of those things all of us are finding out is that 1 million people - lower income people the plan was allegedly supposed to help - will lose their insurance under the new rules. And they'll lose it now, four years before they're eligible for the new government-sponsored plans.

It's time for the Democrats to understand that "no" means "no". Vote for [local candidate(s)], who will work to repeal the government takeover and instead work to pass measures designed to put health insurance back into the hands of the people who need it.

Until your employer drops it. Hey, Obama can't be expected to take care of every little undercapitalized business.

No problem. In fact, it’s part of the plan. Just add them to the government insurance plan.
