It must suck to live in a society and culture where the top leaders state plainly that which can be readily seen to be false.
Yes we are, up to a point, and as soon as I posted my comment I expected another FReeper to say so. Still, I believe there is an important difference between having a leader make false claims about policies or attitudes (things that are not simple matters of fact) and having one who makes simple factual claims that are readily disproved by objective data. There are photos easily viewed that show terrorists on board the Mavi Marmara holding knives. Thus Assad is plainly lying when he states what "we all know". Obama's lies tend not to be so simply and readily disproved. Even our leftist media would have to ask Gibbs to explain such a discrepancy and our culture demands that such simple contradictions be avoided.
