If Hayworth wins, can he win the general election?
Yes, as long as McCain doesn't exact revenge by endorsing and actively assisting the Dem. Of course, at that point, McCain would really be--indisputably, too--a traitor.

McCain might very well decide to pull a Charlie Crist and run as an independent, knowing full well that if he failed to win re-election, that the 'Rat candidate probably would due to the split between real Republicans (who would vote for Hayworth without hesitation) and RINO voters who McCain is counting on to save his corrupt ass.

McCain hates conservatives so much that he would prefer to see a 'Rat take his senate seat, than to see Hayworth win.

Believe that.

I don't know if he can do that, since IIRC, Arizona has sore-loser laws. (SJB and other Ariz. FReepers could do well to confirm or deny that last part.) But, there are a number of things he can do, including assisting the Dem candidate (a possibility, since the most recent polls show J.D. with a theoretical single-digit lead over potential Dems), defecting to the Dems in the Senate, and attempting to snuff out the Tea Parties by inciting the GOP establishment to go massively "bipartisan" in his last few months in the Senate.

It all depends on how angry McCain is, or will be, when he loses that which he feels entitled to, and how deranged he and his supporters become.

That is completely true. We saw that happen in CD8 (part of Southern Arizona) in 2006. Jim Kolbe had been entrenched for over 20 years and because it looked bleak for him, he pulled out. Well, lo and behold, he showed up to celebrate the Dem's win (after he and the local GOP did everything they could to sabotage Randy Graf, including incessantly lying about him and smearing him).
