Pueblo Politics: Hayworth continues pressing for debate

U.S. Senate challenger J.D. Hayworth has taken to calling himself a “one-man economic development” agent for the state, since his presence on the ballot has prompted U.S. Sen. John McCain to spend nearly $3 million on radio and television ads, not including what he’s spending on signs, direct mail, campaign offices and travel.

Hayworth said he’d rather McCain just debate him.

In response to an early debate challenge from Hayworth, McCain said he wouldn’t debate until after the deadline for submitting signatures and then wanted to wait until candidates were certified for the ballot.

“Sen. McCain manages to find time to drop into Arizona for a day or two every couple of weeks, so you would think he could take an hour out of his schedule to debate,” Hayworth said, predicting “eventually he will run out of excuses.”

McCain’s spokesman Brian Rogers said the incumbent “will obviously” debate but “Arizonans also want him to do his job and fight for them in the U.S. Senate, so unlike Congressman Hayworth, he doesn’t have unlimited time on his hands.”

Rogers said to look for some news in the next month or so.

JD needs money folks. McCain has 10 to 1 over him in dollars. McCain is also supported by the very people who are pressing “comprehensive” immigration reform (i.e. amnesty). If he gets re-elected expect him to push something through immediately.

It’s an exercise in futility, JD. Your record beats him in every catagory and he knows it.

I expect him to ram something through if he gets defeated. Looks like lose, lose for us.

I hope JD doesn't bring up the fact that Senator John McCain (R-AZ) gave the keynote address during the National Affiliate Luncheon at the 2004 National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Annual Conference

That would be mean spirited.

Yep, pretty much. Of course, the people could demand the SCOTUS put a stop until the matter was litigated.

McCain has a hair trigger temper, and would not be able to resist.

Seeing lots of McCain snail mail spam, upset radio commercials, etc., makes McCain look desperate. However, his one real advantage, other than a rich wife who bought him his senate seat, is that he is dirt dog mean. The man lives for payback against those he feels have slighted him.

This explains much of his support, even from organizations like the NRA, which have just endorsed him. They do not like him, but they fear him. They know that if they go against him and he wins, he will spend the next six years trying to ruin them.

But, if and when he loses, you can expect a lot of Munchkins to come out of the woodwork and start to sing and dance.

Too bad he didn’t seem to want to win in the fall of 2008.

McCain’s spokesman Brian Rogers said the incumbent “will obviously” debate but “Arizonans also want him to do his job and fight for them in the U.S. Senate, so unlike Congressman Hayworth, he doesn’t have unlimited time on his hands.” He was too damn busy then to "do his job".
