Now that President Obama is back from Chicago, fresh from declaring June, 2010, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender month, Id like to memorialize Memorial Day. Its not dead (yet), but like other American traditions (marriage, a strong military), its dying, and a genuine symptom is the absence of the flag.
In the last month, weve seen Old Glory banned from apartments, offend Mexicans in our schools, and disgust teachers who believe it should be censored. We had a president hold a press conference - the first of its kind? - without a flag (or a clue.)
This is what happens to a country without leaders. The historical covenant isnt shared. The freest nation in history has a problem when its president bows to despots, promotes bonds over borders, and claims exceptionalism is relative.

It's really cool. It has an eagle at the top of the pole. :-)

We can counteract this trend simply by displaying the flag from our own homes and cars, at our places of business.
Just like we can counteract the “no nativity scene” trend by putting them in our front yards.
Myself, the Vietnamese guy across the street and one other guy a few houses down were the only people flying a flag on my block Memorial Day.
Pretty sad.
My Gadsden flag will fly in place of Old Glory until the Socialists are swept out of the Congress and White House.
DON’T TREAD ON ME!
Well, they were all over the place in my neighborhood, esp on my street.
Then again, I live in Texas...
I couldn’t disagree more with the writer’s assertion. On Monday I attended a Memorial Day Parade in the town where I grew up to see my father, a WWII Veteran, participate in the parade. The local Boy Scout troops each Memorial Day place more than 200 flags along an old federal highway that runs through town. More people are attending the parade (approximately 2,000 this year) and post parade ceremonies than in the past. I know the town where I currently live also has a large turnout with many flags on display. The writer couldn’t be more off the mark.
I had my flag up. So did my neighbor.
I had bought a new American Flag recently and my nephew hung it out for me just in time for Memorial Day - it is beautiful and I have seen many American flags out and about in my area of NC (Raleigh - Cary area). All just beautiful!
Obama brings out the real lovers of our country!!!! Just to spite him!!!
I made sure to buy and fly an American flag outside my window this Memorial Day.
I took my flag down when jug ears got elected. I’ll fly it again when the halfrican leaves office...
A veteran is a person who at one point in his or her life
wrote a check to the Government for, up to and including,
one life. They did it willingly knowing that what we have
needs to be protected. For all those who stood their watch
on the wall, well done! You stand relieved. For all those
who still stand on the wall, for all those who had their
checks cashed, - WE WILL REMEMBER.
