Having worked offshore for a few years, I can attest that cutting a riser is pretty pedestrian. Putting it in place is where the fun starts.
Worked in the Engineering Dept for the Water Authority in Upstate NY...Pretty boring stuff actually..

With the Gulf sea floor leaking oil for millions of years, these animals are accustomed to the stuff in the water and may not be that endangered by this well.
I would like to think the tech that's doing the cutting has had practice cutting tree limbs. Cut part way through on the compression side then switch to the tension side for the final cut. Watching this is making me crazy!
