Commander Ed Straker
The head of SHADO, Ed Straker has been involved with every aspect of its creation since the beginning. Formerly a Colonel in the United States Air Force, his dedication and long hours on the job during SHADO’s creation cost him his marriage. Demanding of his people, but also loyal to them. Bases many of his decisions on computer predictions & logic, and is good at guessing the Aliens next move. Rarely lets people get close to him, and can come across as cold & distant.
Actor: Ed Bishop

Ed Straker was a (very young) Colonel in the US Air Force when he was called upon to head up the construction of SHADO. A newly wed intelligence officer, Straker was hesitant at first - thinking the command should have gone to his boss and friend, General Henderson. Once he agreed to accept the responsibilty, however, there was no turning back and no compromising ...
Straker is a complex and tragic figure - SHADO and Ed’s dedication to fighting the alien threat destroyed his marriage and would also play a part in the death of his son. His single-minded devotion to duty sets him apart from his elite crew, who often regard their leader as a cold, calculating, ruthless commander. In certain respects, that may be true, but Ed’s aloofness has also left him lonely, and in many ways, vulnerable as well.
A disgraceful article and disgraceful post to all those who served.
Not funny, cute or entertaining.
Sergeant Todd ROCKS!
“Fear. Fear and... discipline.”
Great line.
Lighten up.
Roy Batty!!!
I’ve got a sense of humor however I don’t find making light of our nation’s veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice humorous or entertaining.
Props to Cpl. Hicks.
Who nuked the site from orbit.
Might as well salute the So Faux soldiers while your at it: Gore, Kerry, Blumenthal ...
Naaah. Why further denigrate REAL soldiers that are actually deserving of our praise.
Facing up to foam-rubber aliens and CGI lazer blasts takes a lesser kind of courage, IMO.
Au contraire! The power station overloaded and blew itself up.
No Sgt. Malcolm Reynolds!
Sorry, KD, but this Holiday is for Real People...not those little toys you play with. This post is really too juvenile for FR.
Vietnam ‘70
“No Sgt. Malcolm Reynolds! “
He reminded the author of the article of a Tea Partier.
LOL, if ever sci-fi had a pro liberty franchise that was it.
A disgraceful article and disgraceful post to all those who served.
Not funny, cute or entertaining.
Thank you for saying so. You’re absolutely right. I’m really surprised that Freepers would mock Memorial Day like this.
