PHOENIX, AZ Authorities say two traffic stops by Maricopa County Sheriffs deputies resulted in the arrest of 19 undocumented immigrants.
According to a sheriff's office news release, the Monday night arrests occurred when deputies were led to believe that the suspects were violating human smuggling laws or co-conspiring to commit human smuggling.
MCSO officials said they often book undocumented immigrants on smuggling conspiracy when detectives can prove that they have an agreement with someone to sneak them into the country.
They said so far they have arrested over 2,000 undocumented immigrants for smuggling-related charges with a 94 percent conviction rate.
Last week, interim County Attorney Rick Romley said that he will no longer prosecute the felony conspiracy cases referred by sheriffs deputies.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio has voiced concerns with the policy by saying that it is a type of amnesty, according to the news release.
"While politicians continue to react to all the hype about securing our southern border, my deputies will continue to arrest those illegal aliens that they come into contact with during the course of their duties. I also look forward to enforcing all aspects of the new state illegal immigration law when it goes into effect," Arpaio said.
Arpaio said he will continue to arrest suspects believed to be smuggling undocumented immigrants into Arizona despite Romleys stance.
“Undocumented immigrants” my ass. Criminal invaders! Ship them back to that oversized toilet bowl called Mexico.
Arpaio should arrest Romley and put his ass in one of those tent city jails. Make him wear pink undies, too!
“Undocumented” immigrants? No, they are **illegal** immigrants!
But...Even pairing the word “illegal” with the word “immigrant” is an insult to those law abiding immigrants who waited years in a legal line to come to the United States.
How about calling them what they really are: “criminal invaders”?
Geeze! We know how the editor of this article voted. He/She voted Marxist!
The docket is too thick with DUI cases, traffic tickets and the like - items that will show a profit.
Actually, it was Thomas's interpretation of a state law. No other AZ county attorney has interpreted the law as Thomas did.
You also have to look at those conviction numbers. The vast majority were plead down to misdemeanors and time served.
Read post #12.
And not only that, the gal(a republican) that wrote the original legislation, rewrote the legislation after Thomas made his conspiracy interpretation with tight language so that Thomas couldn't make his mis-interpretation. But she couldn't get it passed in the legislature because the democratic members in the lege voted with the republican hardliners against it because that helps the dems politically.
You are so naive. This was all a political ruse pulled off by Andy and Joe in hopes that it would lead to higher political office.
It says: “Arizona Court of Appeals upheld his interpretation of the law.”
That’s pretty clear.
If you think Arpaio and Thomas are the bad guys then you’re just wrong.
Romley is gonna pursue drug smugglers and heavier illegal crime.
your understanding of the situation is correct
And Arpaio has misspent 50 mil dollars in the last five years and Arpaio has also caused the county to pay out 41 mil in claims in recent years
What do you want instead of Arpaio?
I want to hear your plans.
Are you talking candidates? I’m sure there are plenty in Maricopa County who are qualified.
No.
What do you want to do with illegal aliens?
You just can’t lock em all up. AZ has what 460,000 of them.
Lots of room in the desert for more tents.
yeah where its 120 degrees
you want to convince your own Gov who is against our new law sb1070
I don’t care if it is 200 degrees, the hotter it is the more effective it is. If you start enforcing the laws many will self deport. If you put the rest in tents in the desert in the summer while they wait to be deported I bet the word would get out and even more would leave. Not only that- less would be coming in since they would not want to be put into the hot tents.
