The Conservative Healthcare Conundrum

While I am an admirer of Massachusetts psychiatrist Alexander Vuckovic for his role in electing Scott Brown, his most recent missive to The Weekly Standard contains a contradiction that dogs many Obamacare critics: if we are opposed to Sarah Palins death panels, are we simultaneously for unlimited government health spending?
Many more Republicans have criticized the former than have proposed solutions to the latter. And unsurprisingly so, since none of the solutions to runaway spending are politically riskless.
Case in point: On May 7, Mark Thornton, a veteran of both the FDA and the biotechnology industry, wrote an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal. In it, he blasted the FDA for delaying for three years the approval of Provenge, an innovative new treatment for prostate cancer. In the three years that it took to duplicate what was already known, wrote Thornton, upwards of 80,000 men lost their lives to prostate cancer. This is equal to the number of men killed in combat in the Korean, Vietnam and Iraq wars combined. Those FDA staffers who had a role in preventing the approval of Provenge in 2007 will have to live with this sin of omission.

Barack Obama has made the Communist Party United States of America (CPUSA) relevant again.
The dangerous little twerps are active again in our major cites, fighting to destroy America as they have every country theyve controlled.
By cleaving themselves to the Democrat Party, infiltrating labor unions peace groups certain Black groups mainstream churches and Obamacare supporting organizations, the Communists have stolen some respectability and gained entry to the halls of power, achievements they couldnt realize standing alone.

Obama's Nominee to Run Medicare: 'The Decision is Not Whether or Not We Will Ration Care--The Decision is Whether We Will Ration Care With Our Eyes Open' Monday, May 24, 2010 By Fred Lucas, Staff Writer
(CNSNews.com) President Barack Obamas nominee to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which runs Medicare, is a strong supporter of the government-run health care system in Britain, who said in a 2009 interview about Comparative Effectiveness Research: The decision is not whether or not we will ration care--the decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open.

(CNSNews.com) Dr. Donald Berwick, nominated by President Barack Obama to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the agency that runs Medicare, published an article in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), advising leaders of Britains socialized health care system: Please dont put your faith in market forces.
The article, published in the July 26, 2008 issue of the BMJ, compared the U.S. health care system unfavorably to the British system, which Berwick said he was romantic about.
The article included a list of 10 suggestions for Britains National Health Service (NHS). One of these suggestions was:

Yesterday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that seniors will soon be receiving a health care information brochure that looks more like taxpayer-funded propaganda. Recognizing that the vast majority of Americans, especially seniors, are opposed to their health overhaul, the Obama Administration has unleashed a public relations campaign aimed at Medicare beneficiaries and what the government takeover of health care means for [them].

WASHINGTON About one-third of employers subject to major requirements of the new health care law may face tax penalties because they offer health insurance that could be considered unaffordable to some employees, a new study says.
The study, by Mercer, one of the nations largest employee benefit consulting concerns, is based on a survey of nearly 3,000 employers.

A study by the National Center for Policy Analysis shows that tax credits in the new healthcare law could negatively impact small-business hiring decisions.
The new law provides a 50 percent tax credit to companies offering health coverage that have fewer than 10 workers who, on average, earn $25,000 a year. The tax credit is reduced as more employees are added to the payroll.
HEALTH REFORM BY CLOWARD AND PIVEN

Richard A. Cloward and Frances Fox Piven were Columbia University sociologists who founded, in 1966, the National Welfare Reform Organization, a parent organization of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). They advocated what became known as the Cloward-Piven strategy, which seeks to hasten the fall of capitalism by overloading the government bureaucracy with a flood of impossible demands, thus pushing society into crisis and economic collapse. This is an instructive prism through which to view the recent health care legislation.

Now that Congress has imposed new requirements on health insurance plans, regulators are trying to resolve another big question:
Which plans must comply with the requirements?
In keeping with President Obama's promise that you can hold on to your insurance if you like it, the new law exempts existing health plans from many of its provisions. But the law leaves it to regulators to decide how much a health plan can change without giving up its grandfathered status.

There has been much talk lately claiming that social justice is a Catholic imperative. But just as Jesus taught about justice, he also issued a warning: Beware of wolves in sheeps clothing (Matthew 7:15). By this he meant that evil sometimes presents itself as a good. Undoubtedly, words like social justice can be deployed in very dishonest ways. It is possible that people could use such words to cloak a very wanton intent.

Weve already explained Obamas promise that you can keep your private health insurance if you like it is pure rubbish. But, you say, what if I have insurance provided by my employer? Surely, I can keep that, cant I? For most Americans the answer will be a resounding no. And heres why. Obamacare requires that all employers with 50 or more employees must provide health insurance or pay a fine of $2000 per employee. Many companies, including AT&T, Caterpillar, John Deere and Verizon, are now figuring out how much money they could save if they just paid the fine.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration is warning the health insurance industry that it will block mergers that threaten to stifle competition.
Justice Department antitrust chief Christine Varney said Monday that vigorous enforcement of anti-monopoly laws is essential to the success of the new health care law, particularly when it comes to reining in premiums. Big insurers have been getting bigger, and in many states one or two large carriers dominate the market.

The future of US medicine under ObamaCare is already on display in Massachusetts. The top four health insurers there just posted first-quarter losses of more than $150 million. Most of them blamed the state's decision to keep premiums at last year's levels for individual and small-business policies, when they'd proposed double-digit hikes to match the soaring costs they've seen under the state's universal-coverage law.
The companies have gone to court to challenge the state's action -- it apparently had no basis for its ruling beyond the political needs of Gov. Deval Patrick. If they win, Bay State health premiums will continue their rapid rise; if they lose, they'll eventually have to stop doing business in Massachusetts -- and the state will be that much closer to a "single payer" system of socialized medicine.

When you write about Oakland government affairs as I do, the work sometimes takes on a public service aspect.
The hope is that by exposing overindulgent status quo benefits, perks and wrong-headed public policy measures, the words will jar something a-loose in the minds of Oakland's unimaginative elected officials.

Twila Brase, founder of the St. Paul-based Citizens' Council on Health Care, blocks more public policy than she builds, but she has become a force to be reckoned with. Twila Brase has no idea why a magazine named her one of America's 100 most powerful people in health care, and, frankly, neither do her critics. "I find that hard to believe," said Peter Wyckoff, a longtime lobbyist for senior citizens who worked for a decade around Brase at the State Capitol. "She may be one of the 100 people most setting back health care reform." The 51-year-old nurse turned activist is hardly a household name. Yet in Minnesota political circles, Brase, founder of the St. Paul-based Citizens' Council on Health Care, enjoys the reputation of a self-made libertarian lightning rod, an increasingly powerful free-market contrarian who blocks more public policy than she creates.

David Cameron's new coalition promised last week to reform Britain's drug-rationing body so that "all patients can access the drugs and treatments their doctors think they need." If this sounds too good to be true from the NHS, that's because it is.
The scheme's "value-based pricing" carries the whiff of market-based reform, but when decoded it means the opposite. "Value-based pricing" translates to expanding Westminster's power to limit pharmaceutical prices.
