BP oil leak: Fallen Deepwater Horizon was tapping second largest oil deposit in the world

If there is a single aspect to the dangers of the BP oil leak, it lies in the question CEO Tony Hayward and other BP executives have been avoiding since the first drop of oil went rogue: How much oil is leaking?

The real answer is - more than anyone wants to admit, because the well holds enough oil to make Saudi Arabian drillers jealous.

The oil field the Deepwater Horizon had tapped is said to be the second largest deposit in the world. Viewzone.com reports, “The site covers an estimated 25,000 square miles, extending from the inlands of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Texas. “

The oil deposit is so large, it could produce 500,000 barrels of a day for more than a decade.

Someone on one of those sites said this, what does this mean?

“I’ve got this sinking feeling we are watching the bed collapse...I pray I’m wrong...but that also now looks like a lot of sand mixing in.”

South Florida, right on the Atlantic Ocean.

Is that live and if so, where is the date and time that has been on the video of the live feed? It disappeared after the event.

Those videos are chilling...especially when you think about the fact that the Deepwater Horizon oil deposit is the second largest in the world. I have to assume that its size WOULD have an impact on the size of the potential sinkhole?

What about a continuous (wave?)that draws water down or that essentially stabilizes but leaves a lower water table that draws the land or shore toward the sinkhole...

So, would that result in a kind of reverse tsunami?

Now I will have to read more and inform myself, as horrible as this is.

That's what happened to me. Someone on this thread turned me onto the livecam - and I have been transfixed ever since. Have been feverishly reading everything I can get my hands on ever since.

Lots of ROV activity on the live feed right now.

I'm thinking they are carrying out the 12 hours of diagnostics planned before doing the top kill.

South Florida, right on the Atlantic Ocean.

Beautiful country. I can understand your concern. Prayers up.

Well, they still have the camera over on the RIT. They need to be showing the BOP.

Oh brother - what’s the RIT?

(Your expertise is greatly appreciated.)

That is what it looks like to me.

If the dome fails, we are f’d on an order I can’t even think of.

1 dead ocean?

3 dead oceans and seas?

Coastal erosion and draw down?

Oil and silt spewed into the coastal stream that draws to the Atlantic?

Lower CO2 emissions?

RIT = Riser Insert Tube

The ~5 ft long pipe they inserted into the end of the riser to collect oil and flow it to the surface. It’s ~1000 ft from the BOP, where all the action is.

Thank you.

Is that where the top kill action will occur - at the BOP?

Vendome - the scenarios you present are almost too frightening to contemplate. (Taking deep cleansing breaths)

Rarely. Usually when they do, it is due to moveable solids packing off the pores in the producing formation, and not something which happens up in the open wellbore.

i am trying to think of an example that is analogous. But, try to picture the Ocean with in a given area suddenly dropping. You would have a confluence of events.

The ocean floor gives away, the water hits the “New Floor”, at whatever depth that would be, a shock occurs and raises the water, just as a tsunami and who knows how far that would travel.

Here is a quick overview of tsunami causes. No need to read it, the pictures do a great job of explaining:

You stay off of the crest as that is likely the gas cap.

You'd think so. But they got oil to the wellbore immediately, so ..... guess not! The geophysickers have made a brown study over the last 15 years, of how to index their target HC's before they test with the drill -- partly as part of the economics, partly operational considerations like that (stay out of the gas leg).

I think you get a tsunami first and then the land would be drawn down and erosion would begin, with little we could do in reversing it.

The shit part is what happens to the Gulf waters, The Atlantic, etc. and what the effect would be on life...?

I know they did. Other sites are commenting on it. Some say this is not live, they have screen shots or videos of it from the past, some are saying yes it is live. I KNOW it was not live for a while, now I can say one way or the other.
