BP oil leak: Fallen Deepwater Horizon was tapping second largest oil deposit in the world

If there is a single aspect to the dangers of the BP oil leak, it lies in the question CEO Tony Hayward and other BP executives have been avoiding since the first drop of oil went rogue: How much oil is leaking?

The real answer is - more than anyone wants to admit, because the well holds enough oil to make Saudi Arabian drillers jealous.

The oil field the Deepwater Horizon had tapped is said to be the second largest deposit in the world. Viewzone.com reports, “The site covers an estimated 25,000 square miles, extending from the inlands of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Texas. “

The oil deposit is so large, it could produce 500,000 barrels of a day for more than a decade.

Maybe, but where is the date and time?

LOL - now that I’ve found your BP link I’ve shut them down. (Seeing Ed Markey’s ugly mug and reading how he was trying to take credit for the feed was REALLY bugging me.)

You were saying ...

This isn’t a red tide thread.

No, it's not a thread about "Red Tide" -- but -- the post that I made -- is -- an answer to another post -- namely Post #30 ... :-)

You’d think every camera would have the same legend w/ date and time on it, wouldn’t you?

BTW - that thread that you got the pics from is very interesting. Have you checked it out lately? Some guy posted some seismic data that definitely shows something going boom. (I think - what do I know about seismic data?)

Also just posted at that link:

At about 7:00pm EST, the BP live cam showed a sudden explosive occurrence - possibly two - taking place at the leak site, with the amount of oil increasing rapidly and the color of the outflow changing to a lighter hue.

The camera was quickly cut to a different shot, one that showed a higher-up view of the plume but actually only further illustrated the extremely volatile change that had just occurred. Then it settled on an angle with the view obstructed by another piece of robotic equipment.

By 7:30 the live cam relay had switched to a menu showing multiple monitor feeds, and shortly thereafter CNN pulled the feed entirely and switched to coverage of the Senate floor. http://tinyurl.com/243zjh9

As of this writing - 7:44pm EST - the link to the live cam has vanished from CNN's front page. However, by following the old bookmarked link, the live cam is back online as of at least 7:49pm. The current shot is taken from a greater distance, and if you compare the relative size of the pipe and the plume to screenshots from days past, it's evident the plume is much larger now and seemingly flowing harder __________________

Is this the same thing you described seeing yesterday, or another incident today? I’m trying to keep a little track but can’t spend a huge amount of time on FR today.

This is so dreadful I’ve tried to avoid reading anything about it for weeks but I figured it’s better not to remain in ignorance.

:-(

Comments and links from other sites, they saw what I saw. Something happened and they are covering it up.

Looks like they killed the live feed and went back to a pre-recorded tape...

Crater’s gone... huge volcano of oil is gone... It’s back like it was yesterday!!!

Guess that’s why the “new” video has not date and time on it! Cause it would SHOW YESTERDAY!

Can’t have the peasants watching what is really happening...

incredible...

One moment there’s a crater with oil boiling out of it... the next instance the “robot” appears having materialized out of thin air!

CNN has KILLED the Live Shot... Taken it away.. This makes me quite nervous

All the links are now ‘dead air’Give me a tin foiul hat and call me a nut-case, but I’d say they all went dark because what some already saw, is not good.

And they’re having to work OT in trying to find some way to spin the story that what ya’ll saw, you didn’t really see ............

is it possible that the scene now on the BP feed, is just an old feed ...........? I mean it’s too clear now ..... And I don’t know it it could go from murky to clear that fast ...... Could it?

I saw with my own eyes on the live shot that Lazy plume we have been watching, yesterday behind that ROV and today in the midground, suddenly get MUCH bigger and larger in diameter, then more gushing, then BLACK, then some light and I could see chunks sprialing up in the jet where the plume had been.

This is not a second hand report. I saw it.

Everyone go see Mr. Mason’s thread...he got screen shots of the eruption as it happened!!! http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/showthread.php?t=362314

got it, that is the same shot as yesterday on CNN, even the flappy thing in the back is the same, none of the black turbulance that was on the cnn feed just a bit ago.

VERY VERY STRANGE

I’ve been watching your reports on the loops and I must say that the fact that you’ve been reporting as you have, indicating a degree of cover-up I never would have believed possible in a free society and a democracy, is almost more terrifying than the disaster itself. If they can cover something THIS blatant and this huge, then what else can they and ARE they covering up.

I thought I saw another explosion and all this white stuff started coming up and the camera disappeared into it.

I saw it too. It went from, like you described, a lazy black plume, to total chaos.

It’s more than that...I just watched the eruption overtake the robot

Well, the thought crossed my mind but what is the mountain? It can not be the Deep Ocean Horizon.

BP will not consider nukes because if they destroy that well BP has no idea when it will be allowed to drill this reservoir again. Due to public vilification of BP. Obama will vilify them too

But by drilling two relief wells (that will end up being production wells) BP keeps its foot in the door. It preserves an uninterrupted claim on drilling and producing from this mega-reservoir. The oil down there is worth billions

Experts can tell you if nukes will work there but I seriously doubt BP will use them due to the reasons I stated

DIAGNOSTICS

Engineers were doing at least 12 hours of diagnostic tests Tuesday. They planned to check five spots on the well's crippled five-story blowout preventer to make sure it could withstand the heavy force of the mud. A weak spot in the device could blow under the pressure, causing a brand new leak. Bob Bea, an engineering professor at the University of California at Berkeley, estimated that anything above 1.6 million gallons a day would be too much for a top kill to work.

FYI-

BP today confirmed that following detailed discussion with the National Incident Commander, Admiral Thad Allen, it will continue to provide live video feeds from the seabed throughout the planned ‘top kill’ procedure – the attempt to stop the flow from the damaged MC252 well by pumping heavy drilling fluids into it.

Preparations for this procedure are continuing with the expectation that it could be activated on the morning of Wednesday May 26, 2010.

Throughout the extended top kill procedure – which may take up to two days to complete - very significant changes in the appearance of the flows at the seabed may be expected. These will not provide a reliable indicator of the overall progress, or success or failure, of the top kill operation as a whole. BP will report on the progress of the operation as appropriate and on its outcome when complete.

Blogger Monkeyfister has been watching the BP Live Cam all week and commenting on strange disruptions and gas explosions.

His account suggests the situation is worse than BP is letting on, and it’s deteriorating:

I’ve been watching the live Spillcam, and discussing it with folks, here all day long. About 5pm last night, we all started taking note of gas bubbling out of the seabed floor. It started earlier than that, actually— see pic a few posts down. About 1am this morning, the eruptions began to increase in spew volume.

At about 8am, CDT, as I watched, things started changing rapidly. Where the water around the two major gush points used to be very clear, it is now super turbid, and detritus is flying everywhere in a chaotic manner. seabed venting is obvious to see when ROV cameras pan around.

Yet-to-be-confirmed rumors are that the casing wall has finally worn through, about 300 feet below seabed, at an annulus (coupling), and the gas and oil are now finding a new way out to the seabed.

Oh brother - if that’s what’s happened ...we are really screwed.

Had to look up casing wall - for those who are clueless like me...1. steel pipe placed in an oil or gas well as drilling progresses to prevent the wall of the hole from caving in during drilling, to prevent seepage of fluids, and to provide a means of extracting petroleum if the well is productive.

(And you can bet that ‘Plug the damn hole’ Obama will be really ticked if his Friday photo op is ruined.)
