BP oil leak: Fallen Deepwater Horizon was tapping second largest oil deposit in the world

If there is a single aspect to the dangers of the BP oil leak, it lies in the question CEO Tony Hayward and other BP executives have been avoiding since the first drop of oil went rogue: How much oil is leaking?

The real answer is - more than anyone wants to admit, because the well holds enough oil to make Saudi Arabian drillers jealous.

The oil field the Deepwater Horizon had tapped is said to be the second largest deposit in the world. Viewzone.com reports, “The site covers an estimated 25,000 square miles, extending from the inlands of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Texas. “

The oil deposit is so large, it could produce 500,000 barrels of a day for more than a decade.

...For my part, after depression sets in, cynical and sarcastic rants help me to stay a rational, logical, reasonable, still miserable individual. The irony is when I try to be serious, itends up humorous. when I make a joke, no one laughs. Such are my troubles...

BTW, glad to bring a smile to your face. We will get through this together...(-:)

I’ve been watching and wondering the same thing, mojitojoe.

Now there appears to be a bunch of different equipment on site - I wonder, are they doing the diagnostics referenced here?

Something happened and it was scary there for a few minutes. It looked like there was a blow out or something, then it looked like the force blew the camera away from the spill. Maybe that’s why they camera is now way over there behind the equipment. There is no question that something happened.

I'm thinking the same thing - you'll note the MV Fausta legend with all the data on the camera is no longer visible. Is it a different camera?

Do you think it had something to do with the diagnostics they were trying to run?

Engineers were doing at least 12 hours of diagnostic tests Tuesday. They planned to check five spots on the well's crippled five-story blowout preventer to make sure it could withstand the heavy force of the mud. A weak spot in the device could blow under the pressure, causing a brand new leak.

OK........... If that was / is, indeed, the well head ‘exploding’ and it is that freakin’ HUGE.........

OMG! What did I just see? Oil leak exploded - huge crater now

Looks like something went wrong... the leak is now erupting from a large hole in the sea floor... probably 30 ft deep and 50 ft across...

I saw it, there is no question something happened and I saw red/orange and light, like some sort of underwater explosion. Is that possible?

Notice now there is no time and date on the live feed. That is now a recording. They don’t want us to see what just happened. They cut the live feed. Oh sh*t!

My daughter was here and she was sitting there watching. She said OMG what is going on. The camera had been in the same place, but all of a sudden it was like there was a huge blowout, oil, gas, sand all over the place. Then we saw what looked like an explosion and the camera began moving all around from the force. You could see a lot of turbulence, oil globs and tan gas? or sand? Then the camera was blown away from it. It either destroyed the camera or they cut the live feed. That’s my take on it. There is no question there was an event and it was nothing they did.

Don't'cha just love how there's still a few grindstone noses stickin' up for Bad People?

They knew they should have left this one alone, but noooooooooooo, like a pedophile, they had to drop their riser and screw the pooch.

Now we're all screwed.

Way to go Big Polluter!

Something definitely happened.

I’ve been glancing at this cam off and on all day. (http://globalwarming.house.gov/spillcam)

I just happened to come in when the screen was full of brown plume - a completely different plume from the thick black one that I’ve been seeing all day. Next thing I know - the camera shot with all the equipment was up and it looked totally different.

Now the robotic arm is fiddling with the equipment - and the camera angle is completely different!

My screen shots didn't catch it because I forgot to pause the darn camera. But here are some that someone else caught. I caught the red part that looked like explosions but if you don't pause that camera and catch the shot there then the screen shot is black. Darn it! Notice the date and time are gone. Either what happened destroyed that camera, they cut it off or...? I’m not sure what we are seeing now is live.

I noticed that too - I heard that there were 7 cameras down there - could it be one of the other cameras?

Just checked out your BP link and it looks like the same camera shot as the one I am watching on GlobalWarming.House.gov.
