BP oil leak: Fallen Deepwater Horizon was tapping second largest oil deposit in the world
If there is a single aspect to the dangers of the BP oil leak, it lies in the question CEO Tony Hayward and other BP executives have been avoiding since the first drop of oil went rogue: How much oil is leaking?
The real answer is - more than anyone wants to admit, because the well holds enough oil to make Saudi Arabian drillers jealous.
The oil field the Deepwater Horizon had tapped is said to be the second largest deposit in the world. Viewzone.com reports, The site covers an estimated 25,000 square miles, extending from the inlands of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Texas.
The oil deposit is so large, it could produce 500,000 barrels of a day for more than a decade.

Oops, my mistake. The bill is to quadruple the tax, not just triple it.

I told my husband yesterday we just need to be pumping the oil out, not trying to stop it.
I don’t even trust that to be a “live streaming cam.”
I think it is on a loop.
At this point, I don’t trust a damned thing by BP and especially don’t trust our government to be truthful with us!
can that be accomplished with some other explosive not as powerful as a nuke?
What if something goes wrong with the nuke?
omg!
No ocean, but plenty of beach. ;-)
I think the governors of all gulf states need to say “FUBO” and start dredging RIGHT NOW to protect what is not already damaged in their waterways to prevent that crap from pushing inland when it arrives.
Keep lots of cameras and media on hand to show the world when the feds try to come in and stop the dredging.
Thanks, I certainly bow to your far greater knowledge. You might want to edit and repost that as a stand-alone thread at some point.
Do you buy BP’s “60-70%” chance of success guesstimate with the top-kill gambit this week? Or are they hyping the probability for PR?
See 109, I think Joe has the best handle on this.
See Smokin’ Joe’s input at 109.
See 109.
Or, George Soros mercenaries.
“?The Worlds SECOND LARGEST DEPOSIT????? If this is true, then why in the *%$\ do we not know about it??!!!!! The fact that that could be true against all we have been LEAD to believe is the true scandal here!! We have been enslaved thinking that we have to be dependent on foreign sources. Why??? THAT IS THE QUESTION THAT SHOULD BE ASKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Just sayin’.... :)
We should be celebrating and sending all tankers and sweeps to the region. They should be sending a consortium of AMERICAN companies to the site and collecting every single drop for the Strategic reserve.
What a way to turn this economy around by harnassing the leak and announcing that we have solved our fuel problems for decades...
thanks for adding some HUMOR to an otherwise very depressing thread...:-)
As an aside, it is a crying ashame none of the fire booms which were supposed to be in the gulf were there, or much more of this could have been contained and burned off before it ever got near an estuary.
and sadly, if and when this is ever FIXED, there will still be NO PLAN, NO fire booms and NO equipment available when the next big one occurs!
Recall that water is incompressible, a fact exploited by Barnes Wallis and the RAF 617 Squadron.
Sinking it a few hundred feet under the seabed first might work better.
I think Smokin’ Joe has it a lot better at 109.
The currents might carry it to the keys - and up the other coast...
Thanks for the ping I read it!
