Until this week, the Obama administration had largely managed to deflect responsibility for the Deepwater Horizon disaster onto others vowing to keep a boot on the throat of BP, while slamming lax oversight on the part of federal regulators during the Bush administration.
But now, with crude lapping into the bayou, even Obamas defenders have turned critical. A White House that prides itself on operational competence and message discipline has been frustrated by an environmental catastrophe it cant predict, cant control and cant out-message and the strain is showing.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs surprised reporters at the daily briefing Monday by announcing the president would answer questions about the spill in person Thursday the first presidential news conference Obama has given in months.

What bothers me is that there IS NO BOOT on anyone’s throat—Obama and British Petroleum are BUDDIES.
They are truly the jackbooted thugs of American history.
We defeated the Nazi regime only to elect our own Hitler and his thugs.
Congratulations to the American voters for electing a ruthless thug as President and welcoming his brown-shirts to bully us all into doing their bidding.
The people of the United States have EXACTLY the government they deserve for voting these thugs into power.
We'll keep getting beaten and whipped until we see it their way.
We have become a nation of hapless victims with no backbone.
What a disgrace !
Well my curiosity is running wild. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if Obama can get away with a high scripted, largely filibustered event. The press has waited a LONG time for this type of interaction. The grumbling has been rising in pitch and degree. If he tries to pull a fast one, and leave 99 percent of their questions unasked or unanswered, he may actually end up fueling a MSM revolt.
Yes, they are lapdogs. But even yappy little dogs get antsy once in a while. He’s let it go too long already, in terms of ignoring these people whose support he has made it abundantly clear he expects and takes for granted. Will he stroke them a little on Thurs., or stir the pot? Time will tell.
Well, it's been three days since you made that comment. Still think so?
Maybe I’m extra cynical. I mean isn’t it pretty common for large campaign contributors to be given ambassadorships? (Remember when the Hunter S. Thompson character “Duke” in Doonsbury comic strip was made Governor of American Somoa?)
I see someone has called for a special prosecutor, ok, I’ll admit that surprises me a bit. But my take is that Holder will not do so, the story will wither and die over the next few weeks. I just have this sense that this happens every day in Washington “Hey, if you don’t run for that Congressional seat, Jack, we can probably find our way to put you on the Gambling Commission”
Like I said, maybe I’m too cynical (esp. RE: Barry, who, after all comes from the super-corrupt Chicago political machine.)
I heard Newt explaining things, and he seemed to do a fine job. I don’t think he’s Presidential material, not trustworthy, but I do think it’s a sign that Barry is in some trouble when Newt goes from “nice guy lets make global warming commercials together” mode to “Obama is a corrupt Socialist mode”.
I hope I’m wrong and it has legs, but no, I still haven’t changed my mind.
