Prophets used to go into the desert and live on locusts for 40 days to gain knowledge. Being one of the long term unemployed for the first time in your life is like that. You gain insight, after the first 50 rejections, and, like a Viet Nam vet, you want to tell everyone, "YOU DON"T KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE!" The new buzz words, "just lower your sights..." makes you want to rip out throats. Whats the point of working even if, after all the cuts, you're still going to starve, just more slowly?
Once you prod the Dragon out of his cave, it's hard to tell who is going to get eaten. Wars never go as planned. Even Lord Obama knows this. He's on a knife edge, as is the country.
So, yes, by all means, let's do something MASSIVE, and put 17% of the workforce out on the streets with nothing to eat. What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Two things:
1. I thought it was only 9.9%. ;)
2. Sometimes it is better to get the surgery than to just hide the pain with drugs. It just gets worse and when the drugs no longer hide the pain it could be incurable. Pain actually has a function.
Unemployment extensions are merely hiding the problem with drugs.
