AT&T to raise fees for iPhone contract breakers ($325)

AT&T Inc. is raising the fees it charges buyers of the iPhone and other smart phones if they break their two-year contracts, while lowering them for "dumb" phones to better align the fees with their real costs.

Starting June 1, smart-phone buyers will have to pay $325 for breaking their contract, up from $175 currently. For buyers of regular phones, the fee is being decreased by $25 to $150.

Yep, that will lock them in now! They will not even consider another carrier. AT&T has made them happy loyal customers now, for life. /s

I take it Apple is getting ready to open it up to another provider and AT&T wants to make it more painful to jump ship. I heard they are working on a Verizon version.

The market isn’t as locked for the iPhone any more with phones like the Droid coming along that do more. For a while they could take the contract risk because there weren’t a lot of competitive phones out there.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if Apple didn’t raise the wholesale cost. I believe AT&T pays over $400 per line wholesale to Apple.

I heard they are working on a Verizon version.

If so, AT&T is toast. Their network sucks.

That's nice thing #286 about Android. Being an open source OS, there are more than one hardware vendor that supports it and you can go to any carrier.

Steve Jobs' snarkiness aside.

ATT isn’t even an option where I live(a rural area).

I’ve never even seen anyone use an IPhone. lol

I saw one at a Best Buy, Thought it was cool looking, but I don’t like the ‘touch’ interface. Damn thing will stay filthy with fingerprints. I’d be compulsively cleaning it if I used one.

Yep, AT&T is making current customers a deal they can’t refuse...But, I promise that as soon as possible I am dropping AT&T like a hot potato....The signal strength STINKS...Never make a call that lasts more than a couple minutes without dropping, and I live in a high level area...

I keep a skin (transparent static cover) on mine. I change it about once a month.

“AT&T sucks”

Yep. Just got off the phone, literally, with a CSR named “John”...in the PHILIPPINES...just doing the jobs Americans can’t get.

It’s not just AT+T, all the carriers are now charging $300+ early termination fees for smart phones.

Gee, makes me want to immediately go out and jump on an AT&T contract. Nothing like shooting yourself in the foot. AT&T phone service sucks to begin with and now they are trying to blackmail their few customers?

I ended up going to the PUC (Public Utilities Commission) about them. The lies just got to be more than I could accept.

It usually costs about twice as much to get a “free”, or “inexpensive” phone with a contract, as it does to just buy the phone outright, and forgo the monthly contract fees. (At least that's the way it is here, in Canada.)

If you can break the contract, and jump to another carrier, where you don't have the monthly fee — you'll come out ahead.
