It's a closed primary in Kentucky and the democrats have a two-to-one voter registration advantage. Hasn't stopped them from being a solid GOP state in federal election.
The fact is Rand Paul got the most votes in a GOP primary in Kentucky ever.

Because Rand won his in a blow out while the Dem race was very very hotly contested. You read too much into this.

Closed primaries full of formerly yellow-dog-Democrats-turned-Republicans. People voted in the primary they were legally able to vote in.

The Dem candidates got 520,412 votes and the GOP only got 351,931.
- We have closed primaries.
- We have and a Democratically skewed ratio in the electorate.
- A larger percentage of registered Republicans voted than Democrats.
- Conway's margin of victory was very small and therefore more potentially damaging.

I just read some disturbing numbers about the Ky Sen. primaries. The Dem candidates got 520,412 votes and the GOP only got 351,931.Which was a GOP record. There aren't all that many registered Repubs in KY, just people who vote GOP in the fall.
