WASHINGTON -- Charlotte Bergmann, the Republican backed by the Memphis Tea Party running for the 9th Congressional District seat, said Monday that she's prepared to step in to a scheduled July 11 debate with incumbent Steve Cohen.
Former Memphis mayor Willie W. Herenton last week declined to participate after agreeing to the scheduled debate on WREG-TV Channel 3, citing the alleged bias of two panelists.
"With the former mayor pulling out of the debate, I am prepared to participate with Representative Cohen in the July event," Bergmann said in a statement e-mailed to The Commercial Appeal.
"The 9th Congressional District needs to hear from a conservative representative who understands the challenges facing its constituents and the country. I am anxious to hear from Steve Cohen's campaign regarding my offer and look forward to an answer in the affirmative."

Thanks, the Tea Party seems to think she has a good chance. I did check her out with people I trust and she is the real deal. I’m already working to get her elected. As I’m in Cohen’s district and don’t want him or king willie which would mean more taxes.
I simply want to see Cohen gone, he’s a disgusting bigot. King Willie is dreadful, too, but he won’t vote an unwavering Marxist line like Cohen.
king willie is just as big a bigot and a racist to boot and anything he brings back to the district will go in his cronies pockets. I hope they bloody each other up and Charlotte walks away with it.
