Roosevelt sought and got credit for nominating the first Jew to the Supreme Court.

Wrong. It was Woodrow Wilson who nominated Justice Louis Brandeis, the first Jew on the Supreme Court. And I don't think there was any great political pressure applied by Jewish groups back in 1915. He turned out to be a pretty good jurist and served a long time.

It seems that my lapse is even worse than you point out. I had it in my head that the first was Felix Frankfurter which means that I had not only forgotten Brandeis but Benjamin Cardozo as well.

Thanks for the correction.
