Former first lady Laura Bush has broken with her husband on the premier social issues of his administration and said she backs gay marriage and abortion.
After more than eight years of silence on the controversial issues, Mrs. Bush said in an interview with CNN's Larry KingTuesday, that gay marriage and abortion were points of contention with her husband, former President George W. Bush.
Mrs. Bush in recent weeks has been promoting her memoir "Spoken from the Heart," in which she writes about her life both before and after becoming first lady.
In response to a question about gay marriage, she said, "There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman. But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."
Mrs. Bush said she and the ex-president "disagree" on legalizing same-sex marriage.

You lose.
We all lost. RINOs like the Bushes & McCains caused everyone of us to lose.
Enjoy the communist in the White House. A gift from the RINOS.
Yes.
You stinking Birchers and Losertarians gave us the quisling in the White House. Congratulations, traitor.
The only troll left on this thread is you. RINO loving you.
I know you are, but what am I?
Shove it, Losertarian.
I was for Duncan Hunter. I have never backed a “losertarian”, but someone with your lack of intelligence needs to grasp at straws, because straws are all you have to debate with.
We’ve know for a long time that Laura wasn’t a true conservative. That can probably be said about GW too.
... which is pretty amazing since her hubby oversaw the fourth biggest expansion of government, after FDR, LBJ and BHO. Nancy certainly wasn’t straight-line pro-life, but she hardly was the Elizabeth-Dole-”you-prolifers-are-ruining-MY-party” type, either.
No, I read the rudeness and condescension in the initial response. We can be passionate and disagree about fine points with each other and still be polite.
I walk the Pro-Life talk, it’s not just talk to me. I have been passionately pro-life since I have been old enough to understand what abortion was. Even so, I have heard the initial whisper run through my head that said “no one has to know.” Followed by the next thought of “and your soul will wither away...your choice was to not get pregnant, dummy!”
I know first hand how friends (and I was in my 30’s, not a teen) mentioned “you have options” - and I will tell you, not once did I think about the president’s wife. My only thought was this is a human life that I am now responsible for (and she is now the greatest joy I know.)
I will also say, the pro-life crowd (FR included) has some of the harshest things to say about single moms. You can’t have it both ways - you can’t (and I don’t mean you directly) be anti-abortion, and then talk about bastard children.
What Mrs. Bush says, won’t influence the pro-life movement, she’s never claimed that title. She’s not rabidly pro-abortion, she qualifies her statement - so she’s not a mouthpiece of the pro-death movement either. I think she could easily move to the pro-life side - and I won’t write off that possibility.
I clearly have a posting history of being pro-life, I believe that when people who make our laws have the value of human life where it needs to be, everything else falls into place.
And for the record, I’d still rather see Mrs. Bush as first lady instead of what we have now.
It's weird being called a 'tiny man' and 'not manly enough' - especially since I'm a woman! LOL!!! < :D
If you'll notice, I changed my tagline yet again. Since the word "butchering" seems to affect your delicate & hysterical sensibilities, I dropped that entirely. I then changed it to pro-abortion, which I used for a few posts. I'm now calling it pro-choice.
I'm not sure what we're arguing about. The article and the internet say she is pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage. You don't seem to believe that. And, because of that, you became hysterical.
I am opposed to abortion, at any stage of a baby's life. I am also against gay marriage. If we're on a site that is also against those things, why are we arguing??? Are you FOR those things, or do you just have trouble believing that Laura Bush is FOR those things? Unlike Laura Bush, I have a clear conscience. [And, just for the record, I am also against capital punishment.]
Give it a rest, Butch. Really, no one cares what you are. A liar’s a liar.
Oh, and if you'll look back at my posts, I didn't drag Bush into this 'conversation' at all. Didn't even mention him.
What am I lying about, O hysterical one?
Are you on uppers? This thread was dead looooong ago. Nice try, but the flying monkeys got shot down and ohioWfan dropped a house on you.
Oh, my goodness, but you are whacked. A hysterical whack job. You’ve outed yourself on this thread.
Yeah, okay...whatever you say. (may I suggest hormone replacement?)
I think you’ve proved by your extreme hysteria that YOU are the candidate for hormone replacement therapy. My hormones are fine, thank you very much.
We differ on what “most women” think. I think most have an objection to abortion but it doesn’t extend to telling others what to do or think. ANd that is not a ground for terminating a friendship or a relative.
